Forgejo is a self-hosted lightweight forge, a software allowing users to forge software, an environment similar to GitHub.

Forgejo launched in 2022 as a software fork of Gitea.

Background

The Forgejo mascot

In October 2022, Gitea Limited was formed and offered paid services. The commercial ownership model, as opposed to the community/non-profit ownership model, received some resistance and resulted in the Forgejo fork. A major Gitea forge, Codeberg, was also unhappy with the new model and switched to Forgejo.
