A special election will be held in the U.S. state of Minnesota on January 28, 2024 to elect a new member for District 40B in the Minnesota House of Representatives, representing parts of Ramsey County. The election will fill the vacancy made after the initial election of Democratic–Farmer–Labor (DFL) candidate Curtis Johnson was overturned for his failure to meet residency requirements.

Background

District 40B is located in the cities of Roseville and Shoreview in Ramsey County, in the northeast portion of the Twin Cities. In the voided election in 2024, Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidate Curtis Johnson won with 65.19 percent of the vote.

On November 5, 2024, there was a general election for the Minnesota House of Representatives. Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidate Curtis Johnson received 65.19% of votes and was initially elected to represent District 40B, succeeding retiring member Jamie Becker-Finn. After the election, Republican candidate Paul Wikstrom challenged Johnson's eligibility in court, claiming that Johnson did not live in the district. The judge ruled in favor of Wikstrom's claim, revoking the election result, creating a vacancy for the seat, and shifting control of the Minnesota House from a tie to a Republican majority. Johnson did not contest the ruling. On December 27, 2024, Governor Tim Walz issued a Writ of Special Election, setting January 28, 2025 as the date for a special election to fill the new vacancy.

After David Gottfried won the endorsement of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, all other DFL candidates for the district withdrew from the race. As such, there will not be a primary election for the seat, which will move to a general election between Gottfried and Wikstrom on January 28.

Candidates

The special candidate filing period was on December 31, 2024, with a withdrawal period on January 2, 2025. In addition to Wikstrom, five Democratic-Farmer-Labor candidates initially filed for candidacy; all but one withdrew prior the deadline, leaving David Gottfried as the de facto nominee.
