Dr. Brian Shmaefsky is a professor of biology at Lone Star College-Kingwood located near Houston, Texas. His work focuses on environmental physiology and throughout his career he has published numerous books and presented several papers on biological topics, biotechnology, environmental science, international education, and science education. For his various works, Dr. Shmaefsky has also been the recipient of several awards and is currently the president of the Society for College Science Teachers where he coordinates the college’s service learning program.
Early Life and Education
Dr. Shmaefsky was born in Brooklyn, New York to his immigrant parents. He attended John Dewey High School as part of the class of 1974. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Brooklyn College of CUNY, a Master of Science degree in environmental physiology from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He studied at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, and earned an Ed. D in science training and education from Southern Illinois University. He also studied at the University of Illinois. His doctoral studies were in science education and environmental physiology.
Career
Early in his career, Dr. Shmaefsky worked as an industrial biochemist at Sigma Chemical Company where he developed biotechnology products and protocols. He then later became a professor at Northwestern Oklahoma State University as well as Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. From 1992 to present, Dr. Shmaefsky has been a professor of environmental science at Lone Star College-Kingwood located near Houston, Texas. There he is also the Chair of the LSC System IRB where he coordinates the college’s service learning program. Dr. Shmaesky is the current president of the Society for College Science Teachers and is involved with other professional science and science education organizations. This includes the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the Biotechnology Institute, National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, Society for College Science Teachers, and Academies of Science in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Texas. Dr. Brian Shmaefsky has also presented several papers across various topics on biology, biotechnology, environmental science, industrial safety, international education, science education, service learning, and workforce training as well as peer reviewed several journal articles and published books on human disease and medicine and a physiology textbook. Dr. Brian Shmaefsky also serves on international organizations and governing boards with environmental topics and sustainability missions. His work has led him to win many different awards.
Agricultural Literacy
Dr. Shmaefsky was chosen as a Teacher Leader for a project called Nourish The Future. He was part of the Teacher Leadership Community as part of Class IV in 2023. The program is a national education initiative developed by science teachers for science teachers. As part of the program Dr. Shmaefskey helped to inspire educators to work on critical thinking, connect students to agriculture, and provide resources that teachers can use to better teach their classrooms. More specifically, his work with the program helped to show teachers how to integrate natural resources, public health issues, and UN Sustainable Development Goals into their teaching.

Personal Life
Dr. Brian Shmaefsky currently lives in Kingwood, Texas with his wife Julana. He also has two adult children named Kathleen and Timothy.
