He first stood for Parliament in the 2001 general election, for Ealing Southall, coming second. He contested and won Shrewsbury and Atcham at the 2005 general election, replacing Paul Marsden of the Labour Party who had stepped down.
He is the tallest MP in the UK, at just over 6 foot 8 inches.
