Mars Area High School is a high school located in Mars, Pennsylvania.
Sports
The Mars High School's mascot is the Fightin' Planet regardless of the fact that planets do not fight. The Mars sports teams include girls volleyball, baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls tennis, girls and boys golf, wrestling, track, swimming, cross country, American football, hockey, and girls and boys soccer.
With a great season the girls Volleyball team led by Maureen Cress made State Playoffs for the first time in 4 years. They were led by team captain and emotional leader Maureen Cress. They finished with a 19-3 record finishing 2nd in their section. Some of the starters consisted of Maureen Cress, Camblin Leonard, Madie Hudac, Chamille Plesniack, and Maura, all led the team to a great season.
In 2007, the boys soccer team made it to the state championship. As for the football team, though they unfortunately lost in the playoffs, there were several players of notable merit, including one Bill Bair. A senior for the 2007 season, Bair became the most valuable Planet player with 35 touchdowns, and he went on to become a WPIAL record-setter by rushing for 2,287 yards in a single season.
Also, then Junior Colin Brown and his outstanding season of .5 sacks and 1 tackle helped the planet team very much. Also, his "Freakishly awesome TRAPS" did very well as he was standing watching the game. Colin Brown also set a mars "Lift a Thon" record with 6900lb Squat thrusts. This kid is just a straight up TOOL. Also, he just received dome from BF and has been walking around even more cockier than ever!
Also, in the Mars football JV team Freshman John "Tool Bag" Frasca did very little to help the team. John is honestly the most amazing tool you will ever meet. He is shows off his amazing traps and types an amazing 22 Words per Minute in Word Processing.
All outdoor sports are played at the Mars Athletic Complex behind the Mars Area Middle School. Football and soccer games are played at Planet Stadium which is part of the complex. For many years, the Pine-Richland Rams and Knoch Knights have been Mars' rival at sporting events however, as Mars is now AAA and Pine Richland is now AAAA, this rivalry has died down, but now Mars and Knoch's rivalry heats up as they now play in football. Recent events of vadalism such as eggings and crude graffitti on the school's exterior have brought up worse rivalries between Knoch and Mars, Mars believing Knoch students are the culprit.
In the 2007 season of the Mars boys tennis had a season to remember. They finished with a 18-2 record and second in the section behind power house Sewickly Academy. They were made up of #1 singles player Bill Welsh followed by Junior Andy Knauff playing #2 Singles and Sophmore Dan Kearney #3 singles. For the second straight year Junior's Ian Welsh and Tim Gaw won MAAC #1 doubles in beaver over Neshanock, and they are looking to defend their title for a third straight year. Also, in the 3rd singles MAAC tournament Dan Kearney finished 3rd, losing to Quaker Valley's #3 in the Semi Finals 6-4, 4-6, 5-7. While Andy Knauff lost in the Semi Finals to Riverside. Bill Welsh, plagued by an absolute garbage chest injury, and #2 Doubles Jake Miszuk and Brendan "Beef" Blakeney made earlier round exits . Right after a stellar regular season they went on to face Burrell in the first round of the playoffs and won convincingly 5-0. Next they faced a tougher opponent in South Moreland. With the match scores tied up at 2-2 it came down to Blakeney and Miszuk, it was a rarity that the team of Tim Gaw and Ian Welsh lost so this was unexpected territory for the team. They pulled it out in stunning fashion with a 3rd set victory in which Blakeney sustained a foot injury. Next after losing to Sewickly in the 3rd round of WPIAL playoffs the team faced Thomas Jefferson. Bill Welsh, played the prom card and lost his match after lack luster performance and also losing was #2 doubles. After Andy Knauff and the "MAAC Champs" won in very close matches. It came down to Sophomore 3rd singles player Dan Kearney. Dan won in a spectacular match and lifted the team to its first state playoff birth in school history. In the first round of States the boys lost to Fairview 1-4. However, the team expects to be unstoppable in 2009 due to a star player simply known as Mutton who is a major tool. The coaching staff was tremendous for the 2008 season with Chris Knauff as the "assistant" coach and the sometimes showing Dr. "DP" Petigru.
Also, while Tim Gaw and Ian Welsh await there #1 doubles MAAC tournament, they have received information that if they win for a third straight year, they will receive statues at the Beaver High School tennis courts in honor of the greatest MAAC Champs ever to play.
Mars Arts
Art
Art displays/exhibitions occur year round in Mars High School. These displays include photography, drawings, paintings, self portraits, and sculptures. The Annual Coffeehouse Art Exhibit takes place at the beginning of May each year, featuring portfolios of all arts students, as Mars does not discriminate between regular and advanced classes.
Band
The band course contains both a fall/winter marching band section and a latter year ensemble experience. In 2008, the Mars band performed to the theme of The Beatles and won first place in the PIMBA Class AA championship. They are well known among the AA school districts for impeccable performances and compositions notable of higher schools, such as AAAA Pine Richland.
