Harvest Moon DS (牧場物語 コロボックルステーション, bokujō monogatari: korobokkuru sutēshon) is the first game for the Nintendo DS in the Harvest Moon series of farm-simulation video games.

Story

The game takes place in Forget-Me-Not-Valley, 100 years after Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town. Unlike the previous games in the series, which create new characters based on old ones, the characters in Harvest Moon: DS are exactly the same as the ones in Another Wonderful Life and Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town, the only difference being that these characters are the descendants of the original ones.

The story of the game mirrors that of Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life and Harvest Moon: Magical Melody for the GameCube while the gameplay follows Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town for the Game Boy Advance. In Harvest Moon DS Cute, the Harvest King sends her away because the Harvest Goddess "didn't do her job right". In Harvest Moon: Magical Melody, this is done by collecting magical music notes, but in Harvest Moon: DS Cute, the player must find and rescue the Harvest Sprites from the other world by doing various tasks. Once the player finds 60 out of 101 sprites, the goddess will be revived, and the player will be able to propose to any of the potential wives.

Gameplay

Crops and Fruit Trees

Growing crops in this game is slightly different from the other Harvest Moon games. You are not restricted to only your farm land to grow crops. Instead, fields of various sizes are all over the map and different growth rates are applied to each. Each field has its own fertility level; the more fertile the faster your crops grow. You also have to plant the crop seeds at different times of the year for example: turnips seeds you would have to sow in spring and pumpkin seed you would sow in the summer.

Animals

The player starts with a dog and a cat as pets. Later, he may get a horse, which can be ridden and used for farm work. Livestock includes cows, chickens, ducks, and sheep, which can produce milk, eggs, and wool respectively. You must build the respective barns for the cows, sheep, chickens and ducks first though. This can be done by calling Gotz the woodcutter. You build animal shed for cows and sheep, bird shed for chickens and ducks. you'll need to also purchase a pond costing 100000G from gotz before you can purchase ducks from the Poultry farm. You may also allow your livestock to leave the barns (cows and sheep) to run around the farm, but you have to push them in (well if you want them back in).

Cooking

The player has the ability to cook various recipes once he or she purchases a kitchen. You can only do this after upgrading your house once, and then buying the kitchen from TV Shopping.

Characters

You play a young boy whom you get to name along with your cat, dog, horse, and farm. On your farm lives your friend Takakura, who goes back and forth to the city every day. The man who ships all your things on the week days at five o'clock, is Mayor Thomas from Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town. There are five other bachelors (your rivals) in the valley. They are Gustafa, Rock, Griffin, Marlin, and Carter. There are also many bachelorettes. The Valley girls are Celia, Nami, Muffy, Flora, and Lumina. The non-human girls are the Harvest Goddess, the Witch Princess, and the mermaid Leia. There is also Keria. If you have the GBA game Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, you can put it in the DS and also marry these girls. Ann, Elli, Karen, Mary, and Popuri. There are also normal villagers. These are Chris and Wally and their son Hugh, Galen and Nina, Cody, Daryll, Grant, Dr. Hardy, Kai, twins Kassey and Patrick, Kate, Murrey, Romana and her butler Sebastian along with her niece Lumina, Ruby and her son Rock, and Vesta with her brother Marlin. There is also people who service the Phones are Gotz, Gray, skye, Karen, Rick (Brother to Popuri) You can have a child after you get married. Just keep your spouse at red heart level for a season.

Harvest Sprites

There are 101 Harvest Sprites which must be rescued. Harvest Sprites are little creatures that serve the Harvest Goddess and have been sent to another world by the Witch Princess to help find and rescue the Harvest Goddess. That didn't work out so well. Instead, they got trapped in another world with the Harvest Goddess. You complete different challenges and save different Harvest Sprites. The Harvest Sprites live in the tree house where you first start out.

Reception

Nintendo Power gave Harvest Moon DS a score of 6.0/10.0. "GameZone" gave Harvest Moon DS a 92/100.

Harvest Moon DS Cute

Harvest Moon DS Cute (牧場物語コロボックルステーションforガール, bokujō monogatari korobokkuru sutēshon for gāru) is a farm simulation video game published and developed by Marvelous Interactive Inc. in Japan, and released by Natsume in North America. It is a simulation game made for the Nintendo DS handheld video game console.

Harvest Moon DS Cute is the same game as Harvest Moon DS, but instead of playing as the male protagonist, the protagonist is female. Players can choose from Jill from the GameCube game Another Wonderful Life or Claire from the Game Boy Advance More Friends of Mineral Town. Compared to the previous title, most of the bugs have been removed.

The plot has changed in DS Cute as opposed to Harvest Moon DS. In this version of the game, the Harvest Goddess is sent to another world when she refuses to set the player on their mission, citing the player as 'too lazy' for the job.

A new addition is the Best Friends system, which lets the player coax another girl (including one of the four "magical girls") into becoming your Best Friend by following the same steps as if you were going to marry them in Harvest Moon DS. Instead of a marriage ceremony, the two of you will meet on the beach at a Best Friends ceremony. Afterward the girl will then move into your farmhouse; later on, your best friend will bring you a random child that any of the 5 bachelors could have. This is not available in the U.S. or European version, presumably because it is similar to same sex marriage.
