On the 30th of September 2009, 44 tourists n board a double decker boat in Thekkady lake were killed when the boat capsized in the lake. The majority of the tourists who died were from Delhi and Kolkata. A total of 82
persons were travelling on the boat named 'Jalakanyaka'
Cause
As per the preliminary reports, the accident took place when a large number of tourists rushed to one side of the boat to see one wild animal spotted on the forest. In that sudden movement, the boat capsized. But this initial report was challenged with some of the rescued tourists reported some structural problems with the boat. The boat was traveling all the while in a tilted manner for about 30 mins. Then at one point when the boat took a sharp turn it overturned and capsized. The boat was owned and operated by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. The government has been blamed for not privatizing these boats, for not enforcing safety precautions and for not having efficient disaster recovery plans. The crew of the boat, driver and helper escaped the incident. The lack of safety measures added the death toll. The passengers were not provided a life jacket before the trip.
Rescue Operation
Initial rescue attempts were made by the local people with the help of KTDC the Kerala Forest Department and Tamil Nadu PWD w. The rescue operations were hampered by the spreading darkness and the distance from the boat jetty. A team of divers from Indian Navy has been assigned to help the rescue operation.
Few of the political personalites including Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan officials of the district administration and forest department state forces, a team of 40-50 navy divers have been rushed to the spot from the Southern Naval Command at Kochi had reached the site to count the ,………………….. the counting is still ON
The Government of Kerala ordered a judicial inquiry into the boat tragedy. The government would meet the expenses for sending the bodies of the deceased to their home states and Rs.5 Lakhs would be provided to the next kin of each of the dead in the accident.
