It has many notable alumni, including leaders in business, military, state and national politics, senior government officers, scientists and engineers. History
Dhaka Residential Model College, formerly known as Residential Model School, was established in 1960 in an area of about 50 acres at Mohammadpur, Dhaka. It was placed under the direct control and management of the Government of Pakistan (Bangladesh was part of Pakistan until 1971). In 1962, the central government gave it to the provincial government, which created a Board of Governors for managing its affairs. After the liberation of Bangladesh, the school was placed under the control of an autonomous Board of Governors, headed by the Secretary of the Ministry of Education. The school began with one study session, known as the 'morning shift'. In 1993, another session known as the 'day shift', was added according to the education expansion policy of the government, to cope with the growing number of students.
At present, the morning shift runs from 7:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and the day shift from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The school was promoted to intermediate level in 1967. In 1999, it had about 600 students in classes from III to XII grades. There were 90 teachers, of which, 20 were female.
This institution was originally established by the military dictator of Pakistan to provide education for the training of army officers in East Pakistan. The school and later the college, was modeled after public schools in the United Kingdom (according to the British Public Schools Act 1868), particularly Eton College. After the independence of Bangladesh, the Board of Governors of the institution was appointed with the Education Secretary as its chairman. The structure of the Board of Governors is as follows:
- Chairman: Secretary, Ministry of Education, Republic of Bangladesh

- Member: Managing Director, Department of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education
- Member: Chairman, Dhaka Education Board
