Born in Bangor, Maine, she now lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her books include How Elizabeth Barrett Browning Saved My Life, Host Family, and Of Men and Their Mothers.
At Bangor's Garland Street Junior High, she wrote a gossip column for the school newspaper. She later attended Simmons College.
