The surgical procedure by which a person's physical appearance is changed to that of the opposite sex. This involves surgery on the external sex organs, and removal of the breasts in the case of a woman.

The person will have the apparent external physical characteristics of the new gender and must usually take horomones (testosterone or estrogen) to maintain their new appearance. They are unable to reproduce due to the lack of actual sex gland (testes or ovaries). Persons who undergo sex-change surgery are refered to as transsexual.
