Richard Boyd Barrett (born 1968) is an Irish left-wing political activist. Richard is a native of Dun Laoghaire with a long record of campaigning for improved local services, social housing, youth and community amenities, workers rights and jobs. He has organised national protests and demonstrations for Jobs and Services and against NAMA and Bank Bail Outs.
He led the campaign that stopped St Michael’s Hospital being taken over by developers. Richard spearheaded the Save Our Seafront Campaign which has campaigned to restore the Baths and retain the harbour as a public amenity. He is a sitting councillor on Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council for the People Before Profit Alliance and is chairperson of the Irish Anti-War Movement and a member of the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party. Richard has been a leading advocate of a credible independent left electoral alliance at a national level . Evetually, this led to agreement between a number of left organisations to the formation of the United Left Alliance in November 2010.
Richard Boyd Barrett contested the Dún Laoghaire constituency in the 2007 Irish general election for the People Before Profit Alliance. In the run-up to the election he attracted support in Dun Laoghaire, following his participation in high-profile campaigns against highrise development, bin and water charges, privatisation of hospitals and support for the Rossport Five. Boyd Barrett lost to incumbent Ciarán Cuffe of the Green Party, by 9910 votes to 7890 votes in the 10th count.
Adopted as a baby, he was born to actress Sinéad Cusack, with whom he was later reunited. This was revealed in the last week of his unsuccessful 2007 Dáil election campaign, during which Cusack, a vocal opponent of the Iraq War, canvassed for him.
In 2009, he contested the local elections for the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and was elected with 22.8% of the vote, more than 1000 votes over John Bailey, who came second.
He will contest the forthcoming general election 2011 as part of the United Left Alliance. and he is widely tipped to take a Dail seat this time.
