Umm....
Care to explain ? Damn.... I hope everything's ok. Not to be too intrusive, but I hope it's nothing serious. -Mysekurity 03:48, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
- No, I've just decided to move on. Essjay 17:59, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, ok. Just as long as everything;s alright. The green e kinda looses its significance without Red. -Mysekurity 20:07, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
IRC Cloak
Not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I'm Werdna/Werdna648 on Freenode and I'd like a Misplaced Pages/* cloak. Werdna648/C\ 23:32, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- Please put your request on WP:ICV (so there will be a record of it if there is ever a reason to ask) and then message me on IRC; I have to talk to you on IRC before I can have a cloak set (freenode rule). Essjay 15:50, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Mediation:
Hi! When I logged on a few days ago, I saw that mediation http://en.wikipedia.org/Wikipedia:Requests_for_mediation/Flashplayer/UGOPlayer_Encyclopedic had been cancelled. I understand that it was due to inactivity of this account. I understand this. However, I just wished to let you know and understand that my account is usually inactive, I tend to edit under IPs. If you wish to reopen the case, it'd be appreciated, but if not, then we'll try to resolve the issue through discussion again, and then probably arbitration. Sbloemeke 18:55, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Congrats
Re: - I'm told you have already been informed of our decision, but congradulations nonetheless. Raul654 19:48, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, JamesF slipped in IRC. :-D Thank you, anyhow! (Oh, and *makes Boy Scout sign* I promise to do my duty...") Essjay 19:52, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Ooh congratulations! Next stop GodKing? :-) the wub "?!" 22:57, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Congrats on your new checkuserness :D --lightdarkness 23:43, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you both very much! :-) Essjay 02:24, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks
I think it must be the "underlying IP", although the page that came up (when it said I was blocked) didn't appear to be my IP (which, if I remember correctly, is 24.58.164.194). Anyway, thanks for offering to help, I'll put the template on if it happens again, thanks for checking into it for me. :)--ViolinGirl 21:59, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- No problem. Essjay 22:29, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Thank you Arbcom
I wanted to wish you good luck with your new responsibility, use it well, use it wisely, and USE IT OFTEN. We need more active editors with check user rights, and honestly I cant think of a better person than yourself. Mike (T C) 01:25, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, I appreciate it. I've only done one so far, but I'm sure that is only the beginning of a very friendly relationship with it. :-) Essjay 02:24, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Quote for the Signpost
Mind giving me a flashy sounding quote or two for tomorrow's issue? Just basically whether you had been thinking about this for a while, when ArbCom contacted you about this, etc. Thanks. Ral315 (talk) 02:22, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sure. Do you want to "interview" me in IRC, or should I post it here? Essjay 02:24, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- (To Ral315) (cc to Essjay, Ambi) Oops, I'd already mentioned the CheckUsers in News and Notes. Feel free to remove it and write a longer piece, or incorporate anything you have into it. Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 03:17, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. Congrats, Essjay! You're one of the most trustworthy people out there! Flcelloguy (A note?) 03:17, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
CheckUser Assistance
Hello, I feel I need some assistance. A user placed my userid in for a CheckUser here Misplaced Pages:Requests_for_CheckUser#PoolGuy_.28talk_.E2.80.A2_contribs.29_and_GoldToeMarionette_.28talk_.E2.80.A2_contribs.29. I am not a very advanced user of Misplaced Pages, however after reading the green box at the top of Misplaced Pages:Requests_for_CheckUser there appears to be no reason for User:Jayjg to complete the investigation.
I am not sure if I have any Misplaced Pages Rights, however I feel as if they have been violated. I could understand if I had been acting to violate Misplaced Pages Policy, however I have not been, contrary to whatever the user who filed for the CheckUser wrote.
I would appreciate it if you would review this and comment back to me. Thank you. GoldToeMarionette 04:04, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Checkuser is used to determine if one editor is using additional accounts to circumvent policy. It can be run any time there is a sufficient reason to do so, as the box on WP:RFCU indicates. (That is not, however, the official policy on Checkuser; it is meant to be informative, not restrictive.) The decision to act on a request is left to the judgment of those with Checkuser permissions; if a given Checkuser believes the request is valid, they are free to run the check. In this case, Jayjg felt it was warranted, and ran it, and it had a conclusive result. If you believe this was in error, it can be re-run, but it is unlikely it will be any different. Essjay 04:22, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- That is exactly why I am inquiring. I don't challenge its validity, just the basis for using it. It feels like it has been used simply to identify a sockpuppet, which I understand there is nothing wrong with having (though some don't like them). In this case, I don't understand what policy was demonstrated to be circumvented. In my opinion none, therefore no basis to run the CheckUser, other than to reveal a sockpuppet. I don't think that is the CheckUser intent. Thanks for your comment back. GoldToeMarionette 04:30, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- The problem is the conduct of the sockpuppet; it is alleged that the account was used to advertise for an AFD debate in which the puppeteer was involved. Such advertising is considered very bad form, and users have been blocked for engaging in it. Using a sockpuppet to avoid such sanctions *is* an abusive use of sockpuppets, which is prohibited. Essjay 04:36, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- I think this is exactly what I am not understanding. There is bad form, and then there is policy and guidelines. I have found a Misplaced Pages Guideline at Misplaced Pages:Spam that gives a recommendation on how to promote Misplaced Pages matters such as elections. "Clean up your mess. For example, after engaging in cross-posting to promote some election, be sure to remove those cross-posts after the election is complete."
- It appears that regular users can not operate within Misplaced Pages Guidelines and Policies if an admin thinks that they are in bad form. You get reprimanded, threatened, and investigated.
- My puppet never voted, never posted on the same pages as my other account, it only acted within a guideline that has wide acceptance among editors and is considered a standard that all users should follow. By taking an official action regarding that one action appears to me to be unfair.
- Certainly I had a puppet, a very obvious one, however it seems like the mere action of having a puppet caused other users to attack it. GoldToeMarionette 05:03, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
