Artpop (stylised as ARTPOP) is the upcoming third studio album by American recording artist Lady Gaga, which will be released in 2013, by Interscope Records. Gaga first announced plans in late 2012 that she was planning on releasing the album in two volumes throughout the course of 2013. Volume One would consist of commercial songs and Volume Two, experimental material. According to Gaga, the album should be not only be refereed to as such, but as a project in which a multimedia experience that comes in different forms.

The album is a follow-up to her internationally-successful albums The Fame (2008), The Fame Monster (2009) and Born This Way (2011).

Concept

Recording and background

Less than six months after releasing Born This Way, Gaga announced that work on her third LP has already begun. "I'm actually already working on my next album," she revealed to US radio host Ryan Seacrest on 24 September 2011. On 18 October 2012, Zedd revealed to MTV News that he had been working on new material with Gaga over the summer, in between touring with the Born This Way Ball. On 30 November 2012, Gaga revealed through her Twitter account that she had written 50 songs for the album and compared the writing process to her previous works; "The Fame" and "The Fame Monster". On 31 December 2012, during an online chat with fans, Gaga revealed that the album would push boundaries and confessed that it's what she has been working towards since The Fame; "It's what has defined me and my fans, and we are claiming the music that is ours." On 23 January 2013, Zedd revealed to MTV News that there was still "a lot of work" to do on the album; "We've been working on it for over a year now. There's still a lot of work left, so we're definitely gonna work on this project for the next month." On 8 February 2013, during an interview with Digital Spy, Zedd described the album as "completely unique", explaining: " no set genre, song length, anything. I'm not afraid to show her the least commercial idea I have."

Volumes

In October 2012, Gaga revealed plans to split the album into two volumes. Volume One would consist of commercial songs and the latter, experimental material.

Titling

The title of the album was revealed in late August 2012, through Gaga's Twitter when she posted a photo of the title tattooed on her arm. Based on Lady Gaga's comments, Artpop's title seemingly has less to do with arty pop music and more to do with popular artworks, or at least the photos that fill the internet. "You're an Artpop generation," Gaga wrote to her fans. "You inspired me to create something that communicated with images, because you do, you communicate with me and each other with .gifs and pictures, and artwork, graphics all day, 24/7 … I'm hoping you will all continue to grow together and stay connected through your creativity."

Release and promotion

Documentary

In December 2012, it was confirmed that an official documentary film, a joint collaboration between Gaga and photographer Terry Richardson, would be released to coincide with the album. The documentary will focus on Gaga and the forthcoming album. The film will be the first documentary about Gaga, besides the special 2011 concert, Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden. Rumors about the possible documentary began circulating in the summer of 2012.

Interactive app

On 6 September 2012, it was revealed that the album would released as an interactive app which, according to Gaga, would offer "the most major way to fully immerse yourself" in a record that will also be available on plain old CD and MP3. On her Little Monsters website, Gaga explained that the album was "going to be a multimedia experience that comes in different forms." She constituted, "It will be released as an iPad, iPhone, mobile and computer compatible application that is completely interactive with chats, films for every song, extra music, content, Gaga-inspired games, fashion updates, magazines, and more still in the works!" In November 2012, Gaga's manager, Troy Carter, confirmed that the album would be launched through a paid-for app and promoted via littlemonsters.com.
