The prison holds around 4,000 political prisoners, most of whom are said to be Islamists and Muslim Brothers. After protests by detainees in 2008, several prisoners were killed. After renewed protest at the prison in July 2008, hundreds of detainees were injured and dozens of Islamic prisoners were killed.
