Ashish J. Thakkar (born 1981) is the Founder and Managing Director of Mara Group. He is a serial entreprenuer who started his first company at the age of 15.

Early Life

Ashish J. Thakkar was born in UK to parents who migrated from Uganda. His family moved to Rwanada in 1993 and a year later, due to the Rwandan Genocide, were forced to move to Uganda.

Ashish J. Thakkar started his first business at the age of 15 by selling computer hardware brought from Dubai in Uganda. He later set up shop in Dubai and became a major supplier to the African continent.

Enterprenuership

In a span of 15 years, Ashish J. Thakkar built a conglomerate of IT, real estate, manufacturing companies with an annual turnover in excess of $100 million with 7,000 employees across 19 African countries.

Ashish J. Thakkar is an astronaut-in-waiting who paid $200,000 for Virgin Galactic's first flight to space. After completion of this flight, he will be the second African astronaut after South African Mark Shuttleworth.

Recognition

In 2010, Mara Group was identified by the World Economic Forum as a dynamic high-growth company with the potential to be a driving force for economic and social change. Ashish J. Thakkar was appointed as a World Economic Forum Global Young Leader.
