Template:Infobox men's college basketball team‎, etc.

Frietjes, here's a template merge I would support in a heartbeat: Template:Infobox men's college basketball team‎ and Template:Infobox women's college basketball team‎.

Have you ever contemplated a comprehensive merge of all the college sports team infobox templates? With a handful of options, I think all U.S. college sports could be accommodated and the team infoboxes would then have a uniform appearance across all sports. Just a thought . . . . Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:48, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

the first is already proposed here. I had thought about the second as well, but it will take more time to work out all the details, since there are differences in the post-season tournament section for various sports. Frietjes (talk) 22:19, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
I just posted a comment in support of the merge of men's and women's college basketball templates. That pending merge should be a no-brainer, and you are clearly already on top of the two minor issues to be addressed in the combined template.
The creation of a combined infobox template for all U.S. college sports teams would require a lot of work and the inclusion of several options, but the core information to be included is common to all. Differences in NCAA playoff structure, etc., could be accommodated by options to be toggled as needed. The payoff would be worth the effort. Not only should these infoboxes have a common appearance within a given sport, the teams affiliated with a given university should also have a common appearance and graphics style, and that can only be accomplished by a common template across all college sports teams. I think you would find the college football, basketball and baseball sports projects to be supportive, and the other college sports do not have active/vocal WikiProjects and tend to follow the lead of the football, basketball and baseball projects. I would be grateful for your help in making this happen, but I also understand that you have numerous pending template projects already. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 11:14, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Infobox conversion requests

Help requested

Hi - Would you be willing to help create a mockup of Template:Infobox basketball biography to help achieve consensus around moving college basketball players to this infobox (see Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject College Basketball#Proposal to migrate men's college basketball players and coaches to Template:Infobox basketball biography for discussion)? I would see two changes - 1) link to college colors (there should be a table for some schools linking to Template:Infobox college football player that would suffice for demonstration purposes) and 2) add a field "college_class" for their year in school (freshman, sophomore, etc), to display above the position field. I think mocking up a couple of existing college players/coaches would help people get behind the idea, but I don't know how to create this myself. Can you help (or teach me)? Thank you! Rikster2 (talk) 23:03, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

sorry for the delay, will have a look in the next couple days. Frietjes (talk) 17:15, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! One concern would be the size of the color table that would need to be added - about 350 D1 college basketball teams. Would this just wreck the template? Rikster2 (talk) 01:31, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
@Rikster2: the two college color templates (Template:CollegePrimaryHex and Template:CollegeSecondaryHex) seem to be functioning with about 330 entries including aliases. if for some reason this collapses, it should be possible to split it into subtemplates and have an outer switch based on the first letter obtained from {{str left}}. I don't know the theoretical limit for a single switch statement, or the relative costs of a large switch vs str left, but that could be explored. Frietjes (talk) 14:57, 9 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi - just wanted to check in and see if you';d had an opportunity to look at this? Can we create a mockup of this? I think it would help the project make a decision. Thanks! Rikster2 (talk) 00:49, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
@Rikster2: just to be clear, you want to create a sandbox/mockup of Template:Infobox basketball biography which (1) adds coloring based on the value of a new parameter, and (2) adds college_class. is this functionality to be merged with {{infobox basketball biography}}, or are you interested in forking that template to create {{infobox college basketball player}}? I don't typically think it's a good idea to fork templates if it's not completely necessary. would it be possible to simply add functionality to {{infobox NCAA athlete}} based on the value of the |sport= parameter? Frietjes (talk) 15:19, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
The original idea was to create a "College basketball biography" template (like college football has done) that enhanced the look/feel and information capture of NCAA athlete. That template is very bare bones and is not sufficient (in my view). During the discussion at Misplaced Pages:College basketball, the idea came up to just adapt "basketball biography" to cover college players and coaches. This would solve another issue which is conversion from college to prop templates. This problem is an issue for basketball because many people create articles on college players then abandon them once their NCAA career is over, leaving it to editors like me and the others at WP:CBB to find and adapt. I have literally converted infoboxes for players who have been out of school 4-5 years. So the request was to link the color table and add a college_class field that would make the template also work for college players/coaches. So people could keep the same infobox over a 30 year career if appropriate. That was what I was hoping to show, though if that creates too many other problems then I think a new college basketball infobox with some consistency with basketball biography would be a second choice. I don't know enough about the coding to know what the best course of action is, but I thought you might. Does that make sense? Rikster2 (talk) 12:33, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi Frietjes - I wanted to let you know that we've moved college players to the existing Infobox basketball biography (see Marcus Smart for example). Do you think we could get a mock up of the infobox that includes colors and academic class? I really think these would enhance the look/feel of the articles. Thanks for any help you can give! Rikster2 (talk) 17:30, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
@Rikster2: I did put a note to work on this on my "to do" list (see the 6th to last item on my userpage), basically it involves modifying template:infobox basketball biography/style. I am currently on work-related travel for another week, but I will probably have some time to work on it in about a week or two. there is already a hierarchy of colour templates being called by that template depending on the value of the team parameter. hopefully adding one more level won't break anything. we shall see. thank you. Frietjes (talk) 17:38, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
Thanks - and I hope I am not being a pest. Hope your travel has taken you somewhere interesting. Thank you Rikster2 (talk) 17:39, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
no problem. my travel has taken me to the Netherlands this time. not the optimal time of year, but it's better than my trip last year to Tromsø in the middle of winter, where I never saw the sun. Frietjes (talk) 17:42, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

@Rikster2: and just when you probably thought it would never happen, we now have college colors in template:Infobox basketball biography, the rest of the changes should be easy in comparison. I created the color template by first merging template:CollegePrimaryHex and template:CollegeSecondaryHex to make Template:NCAA color (could be renamed to make it more or less general). I then created the subpages listed in User:Frietjes/ncaa, which checks the contrast ratio of the colours. anything that is less than 4.5 in that table is considered to be potentially problematic, and is flagged. I don't worry too much about anything over 3. you can change the font color by moving the secondary color to tertiary, and adding FFFFFF or 000000 as the secondary. the reason for keeping a tertiary, is that it could be used as a border color down the road (or with navboxes). ideally, we would merge template:CollegePrimaryHex and template:CollegeSecondaryHex and Template:NCAA color into just one template (or module), but I wanted to make sure I had all the kinks worked out first. Frietjes (talk) 23:58, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks! Much appreciated! Rikster2 (talk) 02:14, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Template:Infobox SCI case

Hey, I see you've worked on this template before and I've seen you around on other templates, can you see if you can help make some of the changes I've proposed on the talk page about three weeks ago? I'm not one bit familiar with template code. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 04:01, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

@SpacemanSpiff: I could certainly help, but is there any reason why we don't just merge this with Template:Infobox court case? Frietjes (talk) 15:22, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
I have no opinion on that, I figured that this was split off for a reason. I don't normally work on law articles and came across this only because I'm writing an article on one particular case but I think (and I'm not sure if I'm reading the main template correctly) that this one offers more specific fields not included on the main template, e.g.: laws applied, superceded, overruled, arguedate etc and also provides the SCI image automatically (this I think could be done automatically if you have a selection field for country, right?). cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 15:37, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Template:Infobox religious building

Is merge possible?

I wonder how possible is to merge Template:Infobox WNBA biography into Template:Infobox basketball biography. -- Magioladitis (talk) 00:30, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

@Magioladitis: possible but difficult, and given the existence of Template:Infobox NBA biography, seems one-sided to only merge one. Frietjes (talk) 14:02, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
Template:Infobox NBA biography is a redirect. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:11, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
@Magioladitis: oops, yes, you're right. then, I suppose it seems like a logical merger. someone would need to do some more in depth analysis of what would be required to merge them. Frietjes (talk) 14:14, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

There are 5 things to take care of:

  • |highschool= needs to be renamed to |high_school=
  • |draft= needs to be demerged to |draft_round= and |draft_pick=. |overseas_career_start= and *|overseas_career_end= do not exist in Infobox basketball biography
  • |profile= is |NBA_profile= so I guess we only need to support both
  • career_teams, overseas_career_teams, awards, medal_templates, medal_templates-expand do not exist in Infobox basketball biography

-- Magioladitis (talk) 14:21, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

@Magioladitis: seems many of the field labels have WNBA in them as well (e.g., "WNBA head coach of" and "Non-WNBA career")? Frietjes (talk) 14:24, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
WBNA career can certainly change to just Career but in worst case scenario we could use Template:Infobox basketball biography as the base infobox for Template:Infobox WNBA biography. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:28, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

If you are going to do these

Be so kind as to add {{Equine}} to all new horse breed articles (past and present) and place a link at List of horse breeds - we have a section for extinct breeds. (And we don't put redlinks on the list because with over 400 articles, it IS the navigational area for people looking for all breeds... ) Thank you for project tagging them on the talk pages, by the way. Montanabw 22:43, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

@Montanabw: per WP:BIDIRECTIONAL, we seem to be over-including {{equine}}, especially in an uncollapsed state. a link to the horse breeds, however, is appropriate. by the way, good luck getting the redirect to Bidet fixed in Template:Horse breeds of France now that it's fully protected for no apparent reason. Frietjes (talk) 22:47, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
No, it is actually the most critical navbox of all; it contains a link to List of horse breeds and for that reason appears on every horse breed article - all 400+ of them. Otherwise, we'd have 400 articles in one navbox, which would be an endless maintenance nightmare and one you surely are not advocating. I'm OK collapsing it though. (Inclusion was a major issue about 4-5 years ago when one editor kept going in and removing it from all articles, then another adding all back in. Long settled). When equine was created, it was intended to list the main overview articles but could be linked to sub-articles as well. Montanabw 23:08, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
see WP:BIDIRECTIONAL "Every article that transcludes a given navbox should normally also be included as a link in the navbox so that the navigation is bidirectional. Likewise, to achieve this bidirectionality, every article linked in the navbox should have the template transcluded." Frietjes (talk) 23:10, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
Trust me, I have had CAPITAL LETTERS directing me to the one-sentence "bidirectional" guideline for days now. The operational word is "should normally" - Seriously, you want a navbox of 400+ articles that mirrors the list page? I doubt anyone does. Montanabw 23:14, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
@Montanabw: you don't seem to be following what I am saying here. I don't want a navbox with 400+ entries. see my response above where I said "we seem to be over-including {{equine}}, especially in an uncollapsed state". I think we should remove it from articles which do not include said article as a link in the navbox. for example, we would not place template:lists of Russians on every article about a Russian person (please read this related discussion). Frietjes (talk) 14:54, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Oh, I understand exactly what you are saying, I'm just saying that I disagree because people do like to read about other horse breeds and; the equine navbox IS the navbox to all other horse breed articles via List of horse breeds as well as the navbox to other horse-related topics. (Sometimes list of horse breeds is linked in an article, sometimes it's not, it's a huge PITA to maintain that as a see also, much easier to fiddle with the navbox and handle all articles at once.) This was fought and settled years ago, and I'd really not prefer to fight it again. I have no objection to collapsing it, though, and looks like you tweaked it to autocollapse, which seems to be how we handle navboxes these days. Montanabw 05:46, 16 February 2014 (UTC)

This template should, as Magioladitis points out, only be used in a page notice, or edit notice, but that is, mostly, not how it is being used in the wild. See Actuary for an example of its being used correctly. Frietjes sometimes you are amazing. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:04, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Thanks for the invite, Freijtes, but I can't set up an edit notice (other than in my own user space), since this can only be done by "administrators, accountcreators, and template editors." This is also, no doubt, why it's being used incorrectly in the wild, as most editors are not admins/etc, nor can they be bothered to ask a (usually busy) admin to do it for them. Regards --NSH002 (talk) 16:14, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

@Bgwhite:, so far I haven't found anything on either list (12 or 31) that needs to be whitelisted in a strict sense. there are some that cannot be directly converted, but that is typically a sign that something less automated needs to be considered (e.g., converting tables to infoboxes, adding new parameters to existing templates, or creating new templates like the 'ordered list' template). I will let you know if I come across anything that I can't figure out how to convert. Frietjes (talk) 23:00, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

@Magioladitis and Bgwhite: I thought that was included in 12, since it is an HTML list. that one in particular is in conflict with WP:LISTGAP, and should be fixed like this. Frietjes (talk) 13:22, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Chromacoding of the Systems of Measurement template

Hello,

I noticed that you removed the chromacoding of the systems of measurement template in this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Template:Systems_of_measurement&diff=next&oldid=590945730 Why? Michael Glass (talk) 00:36, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

@Michael Glass: seemed non-standard and unnecessary per WP:Deviations. could add it back if there is a reason for it. Frietjes (talk) 00:38, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick reply. Another editor put it in to distinguish between the different classes of measures. I know he spent a lot of time and effort to get the colours right, so it seems a pity to lose it, but uniformity with other templates is also an important consideration. Michael Glass (talk)

Change to Template:Infobox medieval text breaks image

Hi. I'm curious about why you made this change to Template:Infobox medieval text. It seems to break the image. You'll see that the template is now listed at Category:Templates with missing files because of this update to the image. Looking forward to hearing back from you! - tucoxn\ 19:47, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

@Tucoxn: you just need to purge the cache and it should go away. Frietjes (talk) 19:50, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! I wonder why that change made it appear in the category if the image didn't really break. Maybe it's a Lua-related problem. Thanks again. - tucoxn\ 19:55, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
@Tucoxn: don't think it's necessarily lua, but just what happens when the doc is transcluded, and the transcluded version lags behind the live version. I usually purge it after changing the template, to allow the transcluded doc to update, but probably forgot to do it that time. I will check/fix some of the others in the category. Change to Independence Bowl template

I noticed that you changed the name to "AdvoCare V100/Duck Commander Independence Bowl" in the template title. Why stop there, shouldn't you also add "Poulan/Sanford/PetroSun/etc. etc."? It makes for a long title and as sponsorship changes throughout the years, probably won't fit. Sponsors come and go but it will always be known as the "Independence Bowl". Template help needed

Hi Frietjes, you sorted out an infobox problem in a flash the other week, which was great. I wonder whether you can help with this query? I'll write some more there what's needed. No trouble if it takes a while; no hurry. Schwede66 05:31, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

If I may chime in on this thread, NSH002 suggested that if I asked very politely you might be able to help decrypt a template, Frietjes? I am looking to add a line to Template:Infobox muscle regarding Anatomical terms of muscle, but I am reticent to make a change as the template appears to be written in a variant of hieroglyphics. I was wondering, if you had the time, whether you'd be able to reformat that infobox (and also Template:Infobox bone if you had time) using current wiki-syntax? I'd be extremely grateful. Kind regards, --LT910001 (talk) 03:30, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

@LT910001: style="white-space:nowrap" and/or class="nowrap" are roughly equivalent to using {{nowrap}}. all three are intended to keep the text from wrapping over more than one line. will look at {{Infobox anatomy}}. it was on my radar, but I had not had time to tackle it yet. Hi. Would you happen to know why NBL players no longer have team colours showing on the infobox? Edit of format on Del in cylindrical and spherical coordinates

Hey, your edit on this page (on 11 April 2013) seems to have made it very difficult to view the table. When trying to scroll horizontally, I have to first scroll down to find the little "sub scrollbar", estimate how much to scroll horizontally, and the scroll back up. But it's easy to become lost in all the equations.

As an example, try finding the table entry for the Gradient and Parabolic Cylindrical Coordinates. You may see that it's quite difficult.

I'm not sure if it's just me (using Firefox 27 on Ubuntu 13.10) that's having that issue now, but would you kindly take a second look at the page?

Thanks!

Monsterman222 (talk) 08:47, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

@Monsterman222: the problem is that the table is very wide, and overflows the screen. you can remove the <div style=...> tag at the top of the table if you want, but then you will be stuck with the table overflowing. either way, you are going to need a scrollbar for narrow screens. Frietjes (talk) 20:50, 17 March 2014 (UTC)
@Frietjes: Right, I see the issue. But, even for narrow screens, I still think that it's better to have the somewhat ugly, overflowing table (and use the browser's built-in scrollbars which are always present) than have the table look nicer, but be very difficult to use due to the horizontal scrollbar being only visible at the bottom of the table. I wanted to see if you agree before I make that edit.

Monsterman222 (talk) 21:02, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

@Monsterman222: should also consider either reducing the font size, or restructuring the table so it isn't as wide. Frietjes (talk) 21:03, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Infobox Old Mexican Cabinet with Vice President (1824-1880)

A tag has been placed on Template:Infobox Old Mexican Cabinet with Vice President (1824-1880) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Misplaced Pages. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page's talk page, where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Hi Frietjes! Thank you for the offered help over here. Do you speak German by any chance? @Horst-schlaemma: Ich kann nur ein bischen Deutsch sprechen. I bin austauschstudentin in 1994 in der Schweiz gewesen. Nach 20 jahren ... but, it appears you can speak english, so all is well. first, we need a name for the new template, e.g., de:Vorlage:Infobox Auszeichnung or de:Vorlage:Infobox Ehrung? or, do we just change the military one to make it more general? Frietjes (talk) 18:28, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
Sehr schön, klingt doch noch gut! :) But I'm perfectly fine with doing it in English, just asked because the infobox might need a little understanding.
I think de:Vorlage:Infobox Ehrung nails it. "Preis" would be possible too, but might be a little limiting, as I'd like to include decorations like the Federal Cross of Merit as well. This could serve as a base perhaps, I'm not sure how to program this correctly. But it'd be great if it'd look more like this. :) Cheers Horst-schlaemma (talk) 10:48, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Template:UNT Music‎

No biggie, but why not leave the interlanguage links? It seems helpful for subjects/institutions that have international reach. Not taking advantage of it diminishes the overall picture; it's a distinct opportunity to use the links in a way that connects the dots. The alternative would be to translate all the linked articles, which is cumbersome. And translating all the articles calls into question notability beyond the original language. Eurodog (talk) 15:09, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

@Eurodog: we should be careful to distinguish between articles and navigation boxes. a list article is a great place for a complete list, while navigational boxes are for navigation within WP (not for external links). see WP:BIDIRECTIONAL. so, in short, if someone wants the complete lists, he/she can use List of University of North Texas College of Music alumni and related articles. ToC

Is it possible that "Template:List of female movie actors by name header" is replaced by some Toc template instead of having 20 wikilinks? -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:30, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

@Magioladitis: I replaced the ToC within the template with something slightly more automated. it should be possible to make this even more automated using LUA, but it would take some time to rewrite it. or, now that I think about it, you could move the template to List of female movie actors by name then just transclude the top part of the article in all the subarticles. Template:Basketballyearcat

Hi Frietjes. Could you please fix the coding on Template:Basketballyearcat so that the very first year possible is 1891? That is when basketball was invented and there shouldn't be anything prior to that year. Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 15:21, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

@Jrcla2: fixed, and now you don't have to pass the year to the template, just use {{basketballyearcat}} and it will automatically determine the year from the category name. by the way, do you think it would be better for the template to generate links to five years prior and five years after, rather than the years in the decade? in other words, 2001 would have links to 1996 through 2006 rather than 2000 to 2010. Frietjes (talk) 15:47, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Great, appreciate it. I agree with you about the years - it's always infinitely more useful (IMO) to see the preceding and succeeding years rather than that decade. If you made that change as well I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. Jrcla2 (talk) 15:49, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Hello Frietjes,

This is impressive and I will look more closely and learn from it soon. Thank you for this editing.

Do you know what class and/or styling to set here so that (1) the groupname backgrounds are the same as the overall background and (2) the overall background fills the whole template? Solution and/or advice most welcome.

Sardanaphalus (talk) 16:55, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

@Sardanaphalus: this version works well for me. is there anything more needed? as far as the aligned table template/module goes, I plan to add a 'rowXclass' parameter in a moment, which will allow you to set the class for the entire top row. and, I think it would be good to be able to toggle which rows/cols are header rows and columns, with the proper scope parameter added, but for now, it seems solve the problem of simple embedding of tables into templates without having to renumber every time you add a new row (e.g., when you use infobox|child=yes and you want to add a new row). Template:Aligned table help

Hello Frietjes,

  1. I'm trying {{Aligned table}} in the sandbox here and am wondering how to avoid the gaps that appear in its corresponding testcases (due, I imagine, to unfilled cells or rows). I've tried a few things without success and feel I must've missed or forgotten something..?
  2. Similarly, I'm pretty sure I'm overlooking or have forgotten how to avoid the Template:95% repetitions you can see in the code for the Vitamins and Trace metals sections of the template..?
  3. When a styleY.X is provided in an {{aligned table}}, does it inherit anything from styleX and/or rowstyleY, or, as I think is the case, start from a default..? (If it is the latter, maybe something like |precedence=col or row could be set to indicate whether styles from styleX or rowstyleY would take precedence when combined to form a default styleY.X..?)
  4. And would it be tricky to set up names such as colXalign, colXclass, colXstyle, rowYclass, rowYstyle, colXrowYstyle etc as alternatives to alignX, classX, etc..?

{{Aligned table}} looks like a very useful thing – I obviously just need to learn a bit more about it. Regards, Sardanaphalus (talk) 14:30, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

for that particular application, I would suggest using {{infobox3cols}}. the aligned table template will render cells for any defined parameters, even if they are empty. as far as the X.Y is concerned, it does not inherit. the order is styleX.Y > rowXstyle > styleX (the same is true for class). Frietjes (talk) 14:41, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
  • As I'd already spent some time on an {{Infobox}} version that preceded the one using {{Aligned table}}s, I've returned to and implemented that one rather than take on {{Infobox3cols}}. Thanks, though, for making me aware of this possibility.
Thanks also for confirming that styleY.X etc doesn't inherit anything. Do you think it would be worth setting up something like {{{precedence}}} above to enable it to start from a styleY or styleX styling..?
I'm about to look at Module:Aligned table to see how straightforward (or not) adding the alternative colXalign etc names might be.
Sardanaphalus (talk) 09:44, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
... Doesn't look like I can guess how alternative parameter names are added. Is it something tricky to achieve in Lua..? Sardanaphalus (talk) 10:02, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
I added colalignX, colclassX, colstyleX, ... which matches the rowalignY, rowclassY, rowstyleY, ... which matches the syntax used by {{infobox}}. feel free to experiment with the module sandbox. Frietjes (talk) 13:51, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Thanks. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend the {{Infobox}} variable-naming: colalignX can suggest, for example, the Xth kind of column alignment rather than the alignment for the Xth column (and so on). But I'll experiment in the sandbox and see what happens. Sardanaphalus (talk) 17:54, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Template:Infobox nutritional value

(rm unjustified width parameter)

Why unjustified? Sardanaphalus (talk) 17:46, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

we don't need per-article widths/labelstyles/datastyles/bodystyles or really any other per-article styling. the default width ensures uniform presentation across articles. the |width= (and other unnecessary styling parameters) removed from most if not all infoboxes and sidebars. Frietjes (talk) 17:49, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
In that case, perhaps a bot or bots should trek among the pages using infoboxes, sidebars, etc and ensure any images or other templates immediately above or below the infoboxes etc are this default width. Also, are you sure striving for what sounds like a "one size fits all" approach is wise? It seems to me that the more an infobox etc is used, the more the variety in what it's asked to present grows – especially the more general or overarching the topic. Uniformity needn't mean rigidty..? Sardanaphalus (talk) 18:29, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
yes, this is the reason for using the defaults in {{infobox}} and {{sidebar}} which are the same. and yes, uniformity does restrict variation by definition. Frietjes (talk) 18:33, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
I suppose it's a matter of degree. And, I suppose I'd say that uniformity is something that's more described than prescribed. In other words, to take the cases in point, more than some variation in width, or in the means to accommodate information, etc, would be needed before uniformity among a family of templates and their use is lost. Their all being near-identical may be lost, but not their uniformity. Preventing such variation makes it more difficult to produce or maintain uniformity in some – perhaps many – articles, thanks to the other elements (images, other templates, etc) brought together to make them.
Perhaps some sort of underlying "gutter" for templates/images/etc might be worthwhile, on the righthand side (if not both sides) of the screen/page.

"DR Congo" or "Democratic Republic of the Congo" ?

Hello Frietjes, this article title —

What do you think about that? Maiō T. (talk) 19:12, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

@Maiō T.: I don't really have an opinion on the primary name. you can always create redirects. however, the primary name should be the link used within navboxes to allow WP:BRINT. Frietjes (talk) 13:23, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
DR Congo national basketball team is now the primary article – 80 articles link there. The "Democratic"- article is now just a redirect page, but, not used (nothing links there). Maiō T. (talk) 15:33, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Pages with small around ref

Cc: Bgwhite. Pages found User:Magioladitis/sandbox contain census box with small tags around refs. Should the tags be removed? -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:52, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

I would. if there is a desire to make the refs smaller, then that feature should be added to {{US Census population}}. Frietjes (talk) 21:57, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. One more question: There are plenty of pages such as Czechoslovakia at the 1984 Winter Olympics where there is a sup tag inside a small tag to indicate a note. I usually move the sup tag outside. Is this OK or not? For example I change <small>1 foo</small> to 1 <small>foo</small>. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:59, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
probably making your life harder, but I would recommend this change since the small tags are indicating a list of footnotes. Frietjes (talk) 22:03, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Template:Early Lutheran controversies

Thanks for these edits. I see they mean you've already managed to implement the colXclass kind of parameter names for {{Aligned table}}, which I appreciate as I'm about to try using the template again. It looks like the class "sortable" will work with it, which, if so, means I'll be wondering whether it's possible (without too much effort) to create a sortable aligned table that can be split across a page or template, wrapping bottom-to-top from left to right (or can this be done already somehow?). Just in case you don't already have enough Misplaced Pages things to consider. Regards, Sardanaphalus (talk) 18:37, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

PS Did you notice how the hlist in Early Lutheran controversies' row1 cell3 seems to cause row1's content to become misaligned?

@Magioladitis: why do we have Misplaced Pages:CHECKWIKI/100 dump and Misplaced Pages:CHECKWIKI/0100 dump. also, why was 1999 TranSouth Financial 400 not included in Misplaced Pages:CHECKWIKI/012 dump? sure, it has mismatched list tags, but it also has list elements, so 100 is a subset of 12? Frietjes (talk) 13:20, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
I agree with you. Since CHECKWIKI is a multi-language projects Bgwhite had expressed the opinion that some Wikipedias might allow HTML list elements. This is way the list is split in to two. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:31, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Oh. 100 and 0100 must be a typo in the code! Let's ping @Bgwhite:. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:34, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
Same for Misplaced Pages:CHECKWIKI/101 dump and Misplaced Pages:CHECKWIKI/0101 dump. After the millenium bug now we have the three-digits bug. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:36, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
the regexp also should be adjusted, since Commercial Radio Hong Kong was put on the list for having <<Ultimate. I would suggest something like "<*(?:ul|ol|li)", where \s is any whitespace character, and assuming the match is case insensitive. by adding the trailing , it won't match <ultimate. Frietjes (talk) 13:41, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
@Magioladitis: The 101 and 0101 problem is my fault. Code always added a 0 because there were no errors below 100. 101 should be the proper list name. If we get to 1000 errors, there is either something seriously wrong with Misplaced Pages or our mental state for adding so many errors. Bgwhite (talk) 18:09, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
@Bgwhite: 100 should be mostly done modulo false-positives (e.g., <Old French in Vulgar Latin vocabulary) and other ones that I may have overlooked. Frietjes (talk) 22:30, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
Vulgar Latin vocabulary is the only one left. As it is just one article, will whitelist it. The <<Ultimate issue is not a problem on enwiki, but would be on other wikis that use guillemets, so I'll have to fix that. Bgwhite (talk) 23:00, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
@Bgwhite: or replace the < with &lt;, which is what was done in intercept message. Frietjes (talk) 23:04, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
An even better solution. Bgwhite (talk) 23:07, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
@Bgwhite: done and 12 should be near zero shortly. Frietjes (talk) 23:09, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Template:Infobox organization

Do you think the edit I'm requesting there is worthwhile? I'd appreciate your evaluation. (I've also asked about how {{{one|{{{two|}}}}}} doesn't produce the same result as {{#if:{{{one|}}}|{{{one}}}|{{{two|}}}}} there.) Sardanaphalus (talk) 01:45, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

the difference occurs when one is present, but blank. it looks like you figured this out. Frietjes (talk) 13:52, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
Not by me, but thanks to User:Lfdder's addition to the thread. In the meantime, I decided to go ahead with listing all the changes making up the requested edit, adapted the testcase you added and uncovered some more problems (mostly due to this subtle difference between using #if:s and pipes) that the current template already seems to need. Change to Template:Infobox Nuclear weapons test

Frietjes, you made the changes I requested to the nuclear infobox earlier this year. I would request one additional change.

The box has navigation left and right (to the preceding and following test series). I need an additional option, to move upwards. From test series pages I need provide a link to move upwards to country summary pages. The name of the entry could be "Summary" or whatever matches similar use in other infoboxes.

At the country summary pages I need to have an new infobox which will allow navigation to preceding and following summary pages as well as upwards to a world-wide summary page. It would need the name of the country it represents, but everything else I can think of would be immediately available in the table on that page anyway.

Any questions, let me know; I'm watching this page. SkoreKeep (talk) 16:23, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Hello? Am I improperly addressing the system, or causing a problem? SkoreKeep (talk) 02:26, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

@SkoreKeep: can you provide me with an example set of articles? e.g., a parent article, and a few child articles. Frietjes (talk) 15:57, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Surely. At the low level, consider Operation Greenhouse, Operation Redwing, Operation Tinderbox and the higher level List of nuclear weapons tests of the United States. Another: Reggane series, French nuclear tests, 1979-1980 French nuclear tests, with France's nuclear testing series.
At the top of the hierarchy is List of nuclear weapons tests, which accesses each country's summary page. SkoreKeep (talk) 23:15, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

@MKar: the problem is that 2025 on that WP is equal to ୨୦୧୪, not 2014. so, you need to either translate the years, or add a language code to the #time call. since it's currently in use, I will assume the better solution is to translate. Frietjes (talk) 14:41, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Backgrounds from navbox classes

Hello again, Frietjes: I can use the navbox-title class to produce the #ccf background (the "Level 1 color") and navbox-abovebelow to produce #ddf ("Level 2") and I think I'd once worked out what to use to produce the "Level 3" #e6e6ff, but now don't seem able to do so. one two two

check MediaWiki:Common.css. it's going to be harder since it requires both a parent class of navbox-subgroup and either navbox-abovebelow or navbox-group. you might have some luck asking them to add 'navbox-subsubgroup' or 'navbox-level3' or whatever as an alias to the nested class definitions. Infobox organization may be broken

You were the last editor to make changes to {{Infobox organization}}. I noticed at Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand the image was not displaying, and after a bit of experimenting found that it will not display if image_border is specified. See my edit to it. I don't know if this is related to your change but would appreciate it if you could look into it. This glitch resulted in the image used in this article being nominated for deletion as unused, and potentially this might affect many images.-gadfium 01:02, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

  • I've just added a message to the thread above, so noticed your message here. I was also involved in the recent {{Infobox organization}} overhaul and the glitch originates with me – I think I interpreted "image_border" as meaning "filename of an image with border already added" rather than "width of border to be applied to image" – so, my apologies. I'm confident Frietjes will know what to do to correct how image_border is handled, but I'll also try myself in the template's sandbox and see what happens. Sardanaphalus (talk) 09:42, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
image is handled by Module:InfoboxImage, where it looks like a border (light grey, 1(?)px) may either be added (|border=yes) otherwise omitted (|border=). I've amended {{Infobox organization}}'s sandbox version to treat anything set as image_border to mean |border=yes and added a testcase here. Sardanaphalus (talk) 10:06, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
@Gadfium: looks like the order-of-precedence was changed here. I rolled it back to the prior logic. the issue is that while {{{a|{{{b|}}}}}} is not the same as {{#if:{{{a|}}}|{{{a}}}|{{{b|}}}}}, it's pretty close. however, it's definitely not the same as {{{b|{{{a|}}}}}} or {{#if:{{{b|}}}|{{{b}}}|{{{a|}}}}}. I had fixed some of the bugs introduced in that edit, but did not catch them all. the larger issue here is that |image_border= is entirely undocumented, and probably added during a prior template merger. I am now tracking it with Category:Pages using infobox organization with undocumented parameters to see if we can safely change it to a parameter that adds a border around the image. thank you for the bug report. Thank you very much.-gadfium 21:40, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

Infobox film

Green?

I wonder why {{multilingual quote}} as used in Bernward Doors results in a green square below the writing? - Once I am here, a method to define an image size as a multiple of "em" would be nice. (I forgot where that was discussed.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:08, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

the ability to resize images using em units would require changes to the backend software, as far as I can tell. so, I would suggest starting a thread at WP:VPT if you want more details, or to see if there is any support for it. Frietjes (talk) 16:13, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you! How about the green? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:18, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing that also, and the specifications header! - Next wish (will probably never end): the last lines in the multilingual seems at a different line spacing, and there's too much white space below. (A problem that looked similar was recently fixed.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:09, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: for the white space at the bottom, you may want to try either removing or changing the margin-bottom:.5em at the top of the template. the odd spacing within the quote should be solvable, but will require some experimentation. Frietjes (talk) 22:19, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Template:Infobox tennis tournament

Hi, you recently updated this tennis template based on the outcome of a merge discussion. I made a correction to the country field which was pointing to the city field . The field 'Established' (data6) has the same function as 'Founded' (data5) so it can be removed. If a field is removed should the fields that follow after it be renumbered or not? Is it possible to do a check to see if there any instances of the template in use where the 'Established' field is filled (and the 'Founded' field is empty)? I'm pretty sure that 'Founded' is the standard field to indicate when a tournament had its inaugural edition but a safety check on the usage of the 'Established' field would be useful. The same applies to 'Location' (data8.1). To the best of my knowledge we only use the 'City' and 'Country' fields which means we could delete 'Location' (the separate field, not the label). --Wolbo (talk) 15:56, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

yes, I saw that you fixed the typo, thank you. will add a tracking category for both established and founded, and will check on the location/city/country issue. Frietjes (talk) 16:00, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
@Wolbo: added Category:Pages using infobox tennis tournament with both established and founded fields and Category:Pages using infobox tennis tournament with location field, but it will take some time for the cache catch up and the categories to fill (if there are any entries). Frietjes (talk) 16:12, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll keep an eye on those tracker pages. When converting a tournament template from 'Infobox WTA Tennis Tournament' to 'Infobox tennis tournament' I noticed that the fields 'website' and 'prize money' don't show because the field names are spelled differently (Web_site vs Website and Prize_money vs Prize money). Is there any way to automate or facilitate this conversion? --Wolbo (talk) 17:25, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
@Wolbo: can you provide an example? prize money should be no problem, but in some infoboxes web_site had a different usage. Frietjes (talk) 17:31, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
An example is Gastein Ladies. This is the version with the old 'Infobox WTA Tennis Tournament' template: Old. This is the version after the update to the 'Infobox tennis tournament' template: Update. Notice the missing 'Website' and 'Prize money' fields. And finally, the current version after I updated these two fields to match the generic tennis tournament template: Current. --Wolbo (talk) 14:03, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
The same issue applies to the 'Infobox ATP Tennis Tournament' template for men's tennis tournaments, see my two edits on Swiss Indoors.--Wolbo (talk) 14:12, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
@Wolbo: understood. I added the alternative syntax. by the way, it looks like founded/established are never used at the same time, but that location is used frequently. Frietjes (talk) 14:24, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Transcludesection

I noticed that

use something called "Transcludesection". Any idea if this is OK? Pages show on list with programming elements and I would like to avoid that. -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:51, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

replaced with lst in Amphetamine and removed from Cultus Lake, British Columbia, although lst has it's own issues. will see if it lasts. Frietjes (talk) 14:20, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
What exactly is the benefit of using the lst function over a template transclusion? It's not mentioned in WP:SELECTIVETRANSCLUSION. The hatnote template {{transcluded-section}} is intended to inform users that they need to edit the transcluding article instead of the article they're viewing to edit the tagged section. I chose a hatnote over a banner like {{transcluded}} because that looks like a maintenance template instead of a section note.
Also, there was an issue with the lst transclusion, so I had to revert it. It was transcluding the vast majority of amphetamine to Adderall at some transclude point.Seppi333 (Insert  | Maintained) 05:59, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
Seppi333 then something as to be changed in the code since the of condition refers to "Transcludesection" which does not exist and not to "transcluded-section". -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:46, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
@Seppi333: see the section directly below WP:SELECTIVETRANSCLUSION which points to Help:Labeled section transclusion. Frietjes (talk) 14:02, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
@Frietjes: Ah, alright. Thanks for the link!
@Magioladitis: I'm not really sure I understand the issue; transcludedsection is just a parameter defined on amphetamine. The parameter name is completely arbitrary, but the parameter itself is just being used to indicate which section to display via the ifeq function.

Just to illustrate what I mean from User:Seppi333/transclusion, where I've replaced "transcludedsection" with "waffles"

{{:User:Seppi333/transclusion|waffles=xyz}}

gives User:Seppi333/transclusion (as intended)

{{:User:Seppi333/transclusion|waffles=123}}

gives User:Seppi333/transclusion (as intended)

{{:User:Seppi333/transclusion|waffles=random}}

gives User:Seppi333/transclusion (nothing, since waffles=random wasn't defined)

Best, Seppi333 (Insert  | Maintained) 17:18, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
@Seppi333: I believe the issue is with using parserfunctions directly in the article (i.e., the '#ifeq:'), rather than encapsulating them in a template. Frietjes (talk) 17:24, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
Oh. I suppose the most straightforward fix would be to move all the sections to a template page and transclude from there, though the use of parser functions in articles isn't mentioned as being an issue in WP:SELTRANS. On the contrary, it points out in WP:SELTRANS#Target document markup that it's possible to transclude from articles by appending ":" to the front of the template call (i.e. the case with transcluding from amphetamine with the parser function).
