A series of shootings in Ottawa, Canada began shortly before 10:00 EDT on October 22, 2014, when one gunman shot and killed a Canadian Forces soldier outside the Canadian National War Memorial where the soldier was on ceremonial guard duty. The gunman then proceeded into the Canadian Parliament buildings, where he was reportedly shot dead by Kevin Vickers, the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Canadian House of Commons.
Subsequent to these initial events, Ottawa's downtown core was put under lockdown, including Canada's Parliament and the University of Ottawa. The Ottawa Police Service stated they are investigating three shootings: one at the Canadian National War Memorial, one at Parliament Hill, and one near the Rideau Centre. The attack came a day after two Canadian Forces soldiers were struck by an ISIL sympathizer in a car, killing one of them, and after Canada raised its terror threat level from low to medium.
On October 22, 2014 a Canadian soldier was killed with a long rifle at the National War Memorial in Ottawa by a terrorist gunmen. Earlier two men were seen jumping out of a Toyota Corolla and running toward the National War Memorial. The two gunmen then ran toward the Canadian Parliament building where 20-30 shots were fired. One gunmen was seen running with a double-barreled shotgun. One shooter was reportedly killed by security staff on Parliament Hill. The terrorists were reported to be wearing scarfs around their heads and dressed in black.
Ottawa Police also confirmed shots were fired near the Rideau Centre shopping mall just north of the War Memorial.
Ottawa hospitals reported receiving three shooting-related patients.
Casualties
The slain soldier was a reservist from Hamilton, Ontario and a member of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was on ceremonial guard duty at the Canadian National War Memorial which includes the tomb of the unknown soldier. He was taken to hospital but reported by Government Minister Jason Kenney, CTV News, and CBC News as having died in hospital.
A parliamentary guard was shot in the leg, and was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
A third person was also shot, in an unspecified location. This person was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
