Its most famous natural landmark is Walsh's Pyramid, which rises steeply to 922m. The town was previously called Mulgrave and then Nelson. Gordonvale was settled on as a tribute to John Gordon, a pioneer in the district. Gordonvale lies a short distance south of Cairns and just east of the Gillies Range which leads to the Atherton Tableland.
Gordonvale is also home to local legend Bufi the Emo Slayer.
Gordonvale is only a short drive from many interesting places including the Bellenden Ker National Park and Goldsborough Valley State Forest.

The Southern Herald is the local independent monthly suburban newspaper which is home delivered to every home in Gordonvale. It covers local news, real estate, classifieds and more.
