On a number of occasions now I've noticed you've made a whole series of benificial but tedious improvements to various currency articles. These are mostly the type of improvements that are behind the scene's (formatting, wikifying, etc.) and thus might go unrecognized, so I wanted to take a moment to thank you and let you know it's appreciated. Template:Infobox men's college basketball team‎, etc.

Frietjes, here's a template merge I would support in a heartbeat: Template:Infobox men's college basketball team‎ and Template:Infobox women's college basketball team‎.

Have you ever contemplated a comprehensive merge of all the college sports team infobox templates? With a handful of options, I think all U.S. college sports could be accommodated and the team infoboxes would then have a uniform appearance across all sports. Just a thought . . . . Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:48, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

the first is already proposed here. I had thought about the second as well, but it will take more time to work out all the details, since there are differences in the post-season tournament section for various sports. Frietjes (talk) 22:19, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
I just posted a comment in support of the merge of men's and women's college basketball templates. That pending merge should be a no-brainer, and you are clearly already on top of the two minor issues to be addressed in the combined template.
The creation of a combined infobox template for all U.S. college sports teams would require a lot of work and the inclusion of several options, but the core information to be included is common to all. Differences in NCAA playoff structure, etc., could be accommodated by options to be toggled as needed. The payoff would be worth the effort. Not only should these infoboxes have a common appearance within a given sport, the teams affiliated with a given university should also have a common appearance and graphics style, and that can only be accomplished by a common template across all college sports teams. I think you would find the college football, basketball and baseball sports projects to be supportive, and the other college sports do not have active/vocal WikiProjects and tend to follow the lead of the football, basketball and baseball projects. I would be grateful for your help in making this happen, but I also understand that you have numerous pending template projects already. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 11:14, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Is merge possible?

I wonder how possible is to merge Template:Infobox WNBA biography into Template:Infobox basketball biography. -- Magioladitis (talk) 00:30, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

@Magioladitis: possible but difficult, and given the existence of Template:Infobox NBA biography, seems one-sided to only merge one. Frietjes (talk) 14:02, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
Template:Infobox NBA biography is a redirect. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:11, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
@Magioladitis: oops, yes, you're right. then, I suppose it seems like a logical merger. someone would need to do some more in depth analysis of what would be required to merge them. Frietjes (talk) 14:14, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

There are 5 things to take care of:

  • |highschool= needs to be renamed to |high_school=
  • |draft= needs to be demerged to |draft_round= and |draft_pick=. |overseas_career_start= and *|overseas_career_end= do not exist in Infobox basketball biography
  • |profile= is |NBA_profile= so I guess we only need to support both
  • career_teams, overseas_career_teams, awards, medal_templates, medal_templates-expand do not exist in Infobox basketball biography

-- Magioladitis (talk) 14:21, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

@Magioladitis: seems many of the field labels have WNBA in them as well (e.g., "WNBA head coach of" and "Non-WNBA career")? Frietjes (talk) 14:24, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
WBNA career can certainly change to just Career but in worst case scenario we could use Template:Infobox basketball biography as the base infobox for Template:Infobox WNBA biography. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:28, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Something from Lua

Hi! I posted at User talk:Mr. Stradivarius, but it looks, that Mr. Stradivarius won't respond. So maybe you could have a look:

I wanted to import the portal module to Latvian Misplaced Pages, but we have diffrent system, as we don't have very much portals and the syntax is a little bit different. I created such data page:

'Portal name' = 'parameter 1', 'parameter 2', 'parameter 3', 'parameter 4' (optionally)

If it would be template, then its code would be something like this (for each portal):

] ]

And for inclusion in article I would write {{portal|<<here goes the portal name (from data module)>>}}.

So, how it looks to You? You can make any changes for the module @lv wiki, you won't ruin anything as it isn't used.

If the 'Portal name' would be case sensitive (it would be nice, if not)?--Edgars2007 14:20, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

TwoLeg start

I have some proposal for a new module. Basically it would implement Template:TwoLeg start (and result) templates, but it could be functionality could be expanded to more legs. There could be such module result:

{{#invoke: Leg|main|legs=2
*
here goes some formatting things (result width eg.) and maybe some optional text for cells
*
|{{fb-rt|SCO}} || 1–6 | '''{{fb|NED}}''' || 1–0 | 0–6
}}

would produce

Team 1 Agg.Tooltip Aggregate score Team 2 1st leg 2nd leg
Scotland  1–6  Netherlands 1–0 0–6

And to use the module for existing templates, there could be functions for that, so TwoLegStart's code could be replaced with something like {{#invoke: Leg|start|legs=2}}.

And for the optional text for cells:

Hungarian four colour map

Thanks for the offer of help. Sorry to take so long to reply, but I was banned by an admin with a trigger finger. I don't think I did anything wrong except the usual BRD but I think new admin and wanted to use his power unwontedly. So be it, I had other things to do and got a three day ban I didn't even notice. Nice to be back making WP better, I thought that was what we came here for. Or perhaps to get admin status to fire off at users who spend hours making maps better.

It is a queer one. I took it off the old map and I swear it is the same coords. It is the same SVG but I coloured it as a four colour map (well five if you include Lake Balaton but that can go to four colours if we were desparately trying to do so: its neighbouring counties are in colours to leave one clear for the lake if we are going to be all mathematical about it). I bleow up the map to A1 this is a German map and couldn't find the longitude. I don't have it now but the longitude was possibly Berlin, certainly was not Greenwich. I did as you said and took various measures of lat and long in various ways and could never get it square. I tried moving the 0 degrees long to Paris, which they tried until about 1880 I think and then gave up and said "0 degrees, minus 6 minutes 13 seconds, from Greenwich" or something like that, so it is a puzzle on the map what the lat and long are actually referenced to. I tried to take points at the corners as you suggest, and then interpolate from there, but that didn't work either. All I ended up with was a waste of paper and my neighbours suspecting me to be a brothel because all my windows were covered in sheets of paper!

I imagine it is pretty simple and anything I can do to help you, let me know. The text needs to be fixed but that is a relatively simple job, getting the coords right is what foxed me.

Simon.

I should add, perhaps, I have been offered admin several times over the years. I prefer to be a pleb. Si Trew (talk) 16:39, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
My uncle has the original map, which is a railway map of MÁV Hungarian State Railways, of 1968. I framed it and sent it to him back to England so it is in his model train shed aka loft. But the one I took the dims of was a German one of about 1920, and was well out. I tried to corrobarate with various atlases and so on but to no avail. Si Trew (talk) 16:45, 10 September 2014 (UTC)
@SimonTrew: The program that I wrote can compute the coefficients for a general nonlinear transformation, so even if it is some general nonlinear transformation we can make it work. For example, if you check the transformations that are used for Template:Location map Canada, which is quadratic, or the one used for Module:Location_map/data/Africa, which is trigonometric. if you can tell me the GPS coordinates of some border intersections, I can work on solving for the transformation that will make it work as a location map. Frietjes (talk) 00:05, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
The way I tried it is down at the bottom left (I hesitate to say south west) you have Fiume, now in Croatia, on the coast on a peninsular. Then Budapest is roughly in the centre, and I took a couple of points on the border e.g. Mosonmagyarovar is a few km inside the Hungarian border from Austria, and Bratislava (Poszony) can work quite well, or perhaps Komarom/Komarno (which was essentially split in two when they drew up the borders at the Treaty of Trianon). But I could not work out the projection, something always went out. It looks like it should be a Mercator projection of some kind - the latitude lines are parallel and the longitude lines bend a little - but at this latitude they don't bend very much so it is hard to say. Best thing is for me to try to find the original map for you.
I put all the county info etc on separate layers in the SVG and labelled them sensibly, so in one sense I have done the hard work, but the labels never seem to align with the places. I was fiddling with this forever, I think {{location map}} assumes a projection and this isn't quite it, but close enough to being square at this latitude that it shouldn't be THAT far out, I was getting things WAY out. If Dalston Junction was like that, Central Line tube to Chancery Lane ends up in East Kilbride. Si Trew (talk) 05:09, 11 September 2014 (UTC)

Regards, Sardanaphalus (talk) 09:50, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

the toc floats on top of the other content, making the content underneath unreadable. the solution is to remove all the custom floating toc garbage from Template:Testcases notice, and replace it with

|{{#if:{{{toclimit|}}}|{{TOC limit|{{{toclimit|}}}}}
| __NOTOC__

Nomination for deletion of Template:Location map Kingdom of Hungary

From my talk page back in september.

Bugger bugger bugger, I saw a map in the transport museum in budapest we went the other week and it had the lat and long but in pretty much a mercator projection. My missus was more interested with the toy trains so I didn't get a chance to take the measures off it. If it's wrong (as it is) it should be deleted but I am still trying to get the measures right. The thing is it's specifically Kingdom of Hungary, but the more atlases (atli? :) I look at the more different lats and longs I get. And anything one does on Hungarian articles is rather contentious, so it is probably really better deleted. Because people whose great grandfathers were part of the Kingdom of Hungary will say no that's Croatia or Slovakia or Slovenia or Yugoslavia or Jugoslavia or The People's Republic of East Kebab. Since Hungarian politics is very contentious and goes on racist grounds in far more than would be allowed in where I come from, this is better off deleted. (Hint: say Treaty of Trianon to a Hungarian and await results.) Si Trew (talk) 09:36, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Hungary ethic groups.jpg
I never did get round to this. I took the coords off of file at right, which is very high quality but seems to have an odd idea of where 0 longitude is (it suggests it is east of Paris, but that didn't seem to work). As you suggested, I tried to take well-known points at the edges of the map: Fiume, for example, at south-west. I took very good readings after printing out this map at A0 size and using ruler and compass, my trig is quite good, but I could never get it to fit. Si Trew (talk) 06:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
.Oh, Template:Location_map_Kingdom_of_Hungary/test might help you. You see, Fiume's in the right place but Budapest is a bit too far left and the rest are well out. Si Trew (talk) 06:09, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

convert table

I can't figure out how to convert Security type system to use wikicode for tables. Bgwhite (talk) 23:43, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Once again my ignorance of template syntax has defeated me ...

... or perhaps I need more coffee. Apparently as a result of the recent change you made to Template:Infobox military installation, at least two articles using the template—Predannack Airfield and Fort Drum (El Fraile Island)—are displaying the error message "Invalid arguments have been passed to the coordinates function", but I can't see what's causing the message to appear. Could you take a look? Deor (talk) 12:28, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Deor, it was the syntax for |coordinates_type=. in {{infobox settlement}} you use |coordinates_type=type:city, but the convention for this template is/was |coordinates_type=city without the leading type:. I changed the code to prepend the type, which may mean other ones are now going to throw errors, but we shall see. Frietjes (talk) 15:02, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Basketball color template request

Hi, I was asking about how to change the colour template of the Iowa Energy (the one from the players' infoboxes) given that they changed their official colours after being acquired by the Memphis Grizzlies and after inquiring about it, I was told to ask you about it. Could you please take a look about that? I'd do it myself but I don't really want to screw things up. findparameterdups.js confused by unclosed comment

Hi, re User:Frietjes/findparameterdups.js - it seems to be confused by constructs like

({{Non-free use rationale album cover|Article=Girl's Talk |Commentary= <!-- OVERRIDE )
== Summary ==
{{album cover fur
<!-- REQUIRED -->
|Article=Girl's Talk
|Commentary=
}}

as seen at File:Kara - Girl's Talk.jpg. The script is not finding any duplicate parameters, but as far as MediaWiki is concerned, there are in fact twelve (I've only given two above, to keep it short). It seems that findparameterdups.js is taking the start of the template as {{album cover fur whereas MediaWiki is taking the start of the template as {{Non-free use rationale album cover. The code that confuses findparameterdups.js is apparently <!-- OVERRIDE ) - MediaWiki is treating that comment as being closed by the REQUIRED --> --Redrose64 (talk) 21:42, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

User:Redrose64, fix that one, but I do need to work on a more robust match for nested comments. Frietjes (talk) 21:46, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

Seems like you're the #property fundi (too)

I need help, as usual. I asked questions on WP:VP but answers I was given there didn't help me.

Basically, #property:P625 (location) returns info as a text string, e.g. 9°39'N, 123°52'E (and beware that the apostrophe is encoded as &#39;). That's not directly useful for inputting to e.g. {{infobox settlement}}, which wants eight separate elements. First of all I though I could just have a deep nest of {{replace}} and {{str rep}} to parse the string into something which could be handed to the infobox. So {{replace|{{replace|{{replace|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep |{{#property:P635}}|,| {{pipe}}longd{{=}}}}|°|{{pipe}} latm{{=}} }}|°|{{pipe}} longm{{=}} }}|'|{{pipe}} lats{{=}} }}|'|{{pipe}} longs{{=}} }}|N|{{pipe}}latNX{{=}} N}}|S|{{pipe}}latNS{{=}} S}}|E|{{pipe}}longEY{{=}} E}}|W|{{pipe}}longEW{{=}} W}}|"| }}|NX|NS}}|EY|EW}} does that. It transforms the raw wikidata text like this:
latd= {{replace|{{replace|{{replace|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep|{{str rep | 9°39'N, 123°52'E |,| {{pipe}}longd{{=}}}}|°|{{pipe}} latm{{=}} }}|°|{{pipe}} longm{{=}} }}|'|{{pipe}} lats{{=}} }}|'|{{pipe}} longs{{=}} }}|N|{{pipe}}latNX{{=}} N}}|S|{{pipe}}latNS{{=}} S}}|E|{{pipe}}longEY{{=}} E}}|W|{{pipe}}longEW{{=}} W}}|"| }}|NX|NS}}|EY|EW}} = latd= 9| latm= 39| lats= |latNS= N |longd= 123| longm= 52| longs= |longEW= E

Looks correct, but does not work - inside infobox it is handled as a single parameter with a lot of pipes. What is needed is some mechanism for returning a string into pieces, separated at the pipe. Is there such a beast?

I thought maybe a template would do it, and I tried a subpage of my sandbox, but that principally didn't work because its nesting depth was 41/40, and that was just with a dummy text string not using #property.

After a bit of playing around, I abandoned that idea, and tried instead for a routine which returns just a part of the input, depending on what is asked for. So basically |1=1 returns latd, |1=2 returns latm etc. So for each coordinate there would need to be 8 entries. Main problem is that string handling methods of wikipedia are pretty primitive and unwieldy. In order to extract any particular piece, there would need to be several (bordering on many) calls to retrieve wikidata value. Original method had just one, this would have, I don't know, 30 - 50. (I had a thought while I was checking this - I could pass the text string as a parameter rather than extracting it n times)

So before I finally file method 1 under "too difficult", I thought I'd ask you for thoughts.

I could add that method 1 is fairly specific, oriented towards {{infobox settlement}}. A later development item for the output to be formatted according to a supplied model - |model=format.

All this stuff is in my sandbox (ignore first few lines - that's a different ongoing experiment). with subpage /parseCoords

Any thoughts? --Unbuttered parsnip (talk) mytime= Sat 12:42, wikitime= 04:42, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

Actually that Plan 2B worked out alright. Revised code is in sandbox and sandbox/parseCoords. I'm happy enough with it - I think the external data-get is a good compromise, even though it's 8 gets rather than one, it's a whole lot better than 30 - 50 of Plan 2A. I might publish it as a template. It does rely on the format of the wikidata output not changing - up to 3 digits for latitude degrees, only two for longitude; two digits each for arcminutes and arcseconds (I presume with leading zero). And arcminutes is regular apostrophe and arcseconds is plain double-quote. --Thanks for your input! --Unbuttered parsnip (talk) mytime= Sat 18:07, wikitime= 10:07, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
User:Unbuttered Parsnip, the current use (or abuse) of the property tag in articles should be cleaned up, in my opinion (e.g., Alburquerque, Bohol and others). what we need is for {{infobox settlement}} to pull data from wikidata when (1) it's available and (2) not already specified in the infobox. User:Jackmcbarn updated location map here to pull the coordinates from wikidata. we should do the same for {{infobox settlement}}, or have a keyword to say |use_wikidata=yes or something to trigger the infobox to pull the data. I started module:infobox settlement, but it will take at least a few days to finish it, so the best place to start trying this out is probably in the current sandbox. Frietjes (talk) 15:23, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
I guess changing infobox(es) is the best solution. I don't think as a rule user input should override what wikidata holds - if it's known, then that's what to use. (Might slow vandals down too!) I'm not sure how wikidata gets updated, apart from manually. I guess there's some sort of bot which crawls around, updating wikidata from page data, and 'crawls' is the word - it seems a slow process. (Hardly surprising, as manual update of data takes an age too.)
On the more general topic of wikidata, there are several "fields" I can think of which should be included, in the Philippine context. Income classification should certainly be there, and some mechanism to hang barangays off municipalities. BTW is there a simple way of counting qualifiers - for instance if I add n barangays to a municipality, can I easily get the value of n? --Unbuttered parsnip (talk) mytime= Sat 23:39, wikitime= 15:39, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

I've left requests on the talk pages of both the Update template talk and WP Inline Templates talk pages on Dec 20, but have gotten no response from either. It would much more convenient for WikiProject tracking if {{update}} and {{update inline}} had a category parameter like {{update after}} does. Thanks! Slambo (Speak) 15:53, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

Template:Infobox U.S. state

I saw you have experience in infobox syntax and was wondering if you thought it would be possible to add a Minimum Wage section to this infobox. I thought now is a good time given all the recent changes. There is already a good list to source the info from. Thanks! EoRdE6 21:46, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Merging WNBA player and basketball biography templates

There is currently a proposal here to merge the "Infobox:WNBA player" template into the "Infobox:basketball biography" template (as has already been agreed to via the consensus process). Please weigh in on the proposal to make this happen. Your technical expertise would be most welcome. Thanks. Rikster2 (talk) 00:19, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

  • FYI, Rikster, I started using Infobox basketball biography for a couple dozen WNBA players 2+ years ago. The only practical problem I encountered was the basketball bio template only includes parameters for the NBA Draft, and does not include coding for the WNBA Draft data. I understand that there are other technical issues with this merge, but I thought I would remind you of one of the more obvious ones. Cheers. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 00:27, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Last page with Infobox Arena Football player

Resolved

Connor Reilly (American football). -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:01, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

  • FYI, current Arena Football players are supposed to use Infobox NFL player, not Infobox gridiron football person, notwithstanding the merge TfD that took place early in 2014. A quick check of the first 25 players listed in Category:Cleveland Gladiators players shows that 23 of them use Infobox NFL player, and the other two are either current or former CFL players. This template should properly refer future use for Arena Football players to Infobox NFL player, not Infobox gridiron football person. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 18:33, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

Template Infobox sports season

There's a problem with this template. I've left a message on the talk page. I could have a go at fixing it but I'm unclear about altseason. Is it intended to be an alternative to next/prev or is it intended that all 3 can be used. Nigej (talk) 08:24, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Question

Hello. I have a question for you about university athletic colors. How can we update the colors for the templates for NCAA Division I schools? Some schools have updated their colors and I've tried doing that (removing the CollegePrimaryColors template entirely), but was told to not interfere with the CollegePrimaryColors template by another user. I didn't know if certain users could update those templates or any user and I just don't know how to. If you want me to link you a couple of schools that have changed their colors, then please let me know so I can give them to you for examples. Thanks, Corkythehornetfan (Talk) 22:15, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Corkythehornetfan updating the colors is slightly convoluted at the moment, and I am planning to make things easier. however, you probably want to edit Template:CollegePrimaryHex and Template:CollegeSecondaryHex. there is also Template:NCAA color, but currently people mostly just update the first two and I sync that with Template:NCAA color. in the next week or so, all three of these will be merged, but until that happens, this is what you do. or, you can just tell me what you want to have updated and I can do it for you. Frietjes (talk) 23:45, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
Okay, thank you! I will update the colors from there, here on out and not mess with re-doing them template by template. Thanks again... Corkythehornetfan (Talk) 23:56, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
Corkythehornetfan, from now on you will want to update/add to Module:College color/data. Frietjes (talk) 23:43, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

WNBA color cell

Hi Frietjes - While converting some of the WNBA infoboxes, I noticed that the display name "San Antonio Silver Stars" triggers the colors for that team. Navframe/Wikitable

Hi, just interested in why you are changing college baseball pages to have wikitables for schedules rather than Navframes. The consensus all along, as evidenced by every season page, is that navframes are the preferred method. I'm sure everyone would be open to a discussion but I don't see why we should just change them all of a sudden. Mpejkrm (talk) 23:35, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

massive reduction in code complexity. an even better option would be to use templates like other sports. Frietjes (talk) 23:36, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
OK, that makes sense. I'll try to see if I can play around and get a template to work. Mpejkrm (talk) 23:39, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Mpejkrm, something like Template:NBA game log start / Template:NBA game log section would be very close to what you want. Frietjes (talk) 23:44, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
There is already a Template:CBSB Schedule Entry, I just need to create a Start and End. Mpejkrm (talk) 23:47, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Mpejkrm, right, Template:NBA game log start / Template:NBA game log section / Template:NBA game log end are the analogous start and end templates. Frietjes (talk) 23:53, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
I see, I was just thinking along the lines of other College Sports schedule templates such as Template:CBB schedule entry or Template:CIH schedule entry. I'll play around with it. Mpejkrm (talk) 23:56, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Your assistance is requested . . . .

Frietjes, we're looking to modify the infobox template for college football players: User:Dirtlawyer1/sandbox. After determining what data points to include, we'll need a template editor to handle the coding for us. Once we determine what fields we're adding and what we're deleting, then we'll work on the modified graphics. Are you available to help? I would prefer to have a template editor who has worked on the sports infobox templates in the past and has a solid working familiarity with them. I'm hoping you fit the bill. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 02:56, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

I will probably have time this weekend. Frietjes (talk) 01:06, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Frietjes. There are four purposes in revamping the infobox: (1) make it more compatible with Template:Infobox NFL player to facilitate easier conversion for college players who play pro ball; (2) add several college-specific fields; (3) make it a lifetime infobox, so it can be used by notable former college players who never played pro ball; and (4) update the graphics to give it a more refined appearance, distinct from the infoboxes for pro players. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 22:10, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
Frietjes, when you have time, please take a look at this wish list of design and graphics ideas for the revamped infobox: User:Dirtlawyer1/sandbox3. I am hoping for a significant refinement of the graphics and a distinctive appearance. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 21:02, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

User:Davey2010, no problem, glad you liked the fix. Frietjes (talk) 17:29, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Frietjes, Thank you for trying to fix the "duplicate template arguments" problem on my UserPage, however, oops, your edit commented-out the first value and deleted the 2nd argument, leaving no value. I fixed the problem, but thought best to alert you to the problem for future reference. Cheers. —Telpardec  TALK  00:46, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

User:Telpardec, when there are duplicate arguments passed to a template, only the last one is used. in this case, the last one was blank. hence, what I replaced it with was functionally equivalent, but preserved the additional information in case someone wanted to use it later. so, the oops was not really my edit, but whoever created the userbox in the first place. the goal of my edit was to not modify the appearance of another user's userbox, which was accomplished. Frietjes (talk) 15:02, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

More pages with empty nowiki tags

I fixed one. I bet there are more. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:38, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

yes, for that particular infobox they are not needed, but any which don't use {{infobox}} would need to be checked first. Frietjes (talk) 17:40, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
If there is a tracking category I can fix all at once. According to the list I created in the past here: User:WOSlinker/Infoboxes only 5 infoboxes about person still do not use Infobox. -- Magioladitis (talk)
could be possible to track. the best way would probably be to have it done within module:infobox, otherwise you would need to add tracking to every infobox? it's either that or checkwiki to look for = followed by the empty nowiki, then make sure any offending templates are okay to have the nowiki removed? Frietjes (talk) 17:47, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
I'll ask Bgwhite to perform a database scan to empty nowiki tags. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:07, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Full list. -- Magioladitis (talk) 10:34, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

By fixing

  • 2,000 pages in Infobox baseball biography
  • 16,500 pages in Infobox MLB player
  • 7,366 pages in Infobox NFL player

We are down to 3,234. -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:27, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Magioladitis, good. you can do this because {{infobox single}} no longer has a |Review= parameter. and you can safely do this because {{Infobox NYCS}} uses {{infobox}}. Frietjes (talk) 15:32, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
Magioladitis, good, you can also do this because {{infobox military conflict}} uses a cousin of {{infobox}}. for the apostrophe after italics or bold you can do this. Frietjes (talk) 15:43, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

I see some problems. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:37, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Magioladitis, now fixed, try again. Frietjes (talk) 16:43, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
Still problem with |partof=; see Battle of Vučji Do. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:46, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
Magioladitis, could make that work, but better to just use plainlist. Frietjes (talk) 16:49, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. Feel free to remove fixed items from my list. I messed up and did not keep a full record of what is fixed. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:01, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Magioladitis, I will rescan the original list and make a smaller list of ones which still have empty nowiki tags. Frietjes (talk) 17:42, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

It turns that Template:Infobox college coach still requires the tags? . -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:57, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Same problem for Template:Infobox officeholder but I guess this was expected since it does not use Infobox yet. -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:59, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

For Template:Infobox college coach, the empty <nowiki></nowiki> is there to prevent the next newline from being stripped as whitespace. This newline is necessary for the asterisk to be seen by the MediaWiki parser as being at the start of a line, and so interpreted as an item in a bulleted list. It is not necessary to use an empty <nowiki></nowiki> since anything invisible will do - such as an empty <span></span> or the entity for a normal space &#32; like this --Redrose64 (talk) 12:21, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
Redrose64 that's nice but I think we can get a solution similar ot all other infoboxes by tweaking the infobox code. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:29, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
Redrose64 and Magioladitis, now fixed so this works. Frietjes (talk) 15:43, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
yes, officeholder will work after it's convert to use infobox. if you have specific examples, I can make them work now, but if you check the testcases page for officeholder, you will see there is a list test there for one particular field showing the difference between the current and sandbox version. Frietjes (talk) 15:43, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Template:Infobox NFL coach needs code tweak too. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:07, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Question on center tags

I did this. Is this OK or should I have done something else? -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:34, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Magioladitis: The align= attribute on a table cell is obsolete in HTML 5. If you look at the very next line in your diff, it says
| style="text-align:center" | ...
which does the same as
| align="center"| ...
but is valid HTML 5. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:10, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
correct. by the way, the really broken one was the line directly above your change. we don't need a center tag before the style statement, and the div tag is also unnecessary if the centering is specified in the style statement for the table cell. Frietjes (talk) 14:04, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

A F&R to change

align="center"

to

style="text-align:center"

would be effective? I think we need to set some rules for bot run. Manual editing will take forever especially because I am not familiar with all tricks that need to be done. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:52, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

(stalker)In most cases, yes, that seems to be right. There are always going to be ugly edge cases in no-wiki blocks or code blocks, or something entirely different, like above, where the markup is just broken. So semi-automated (a la AWB) is good, but it needs human supervision. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 14:50, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Template:ISBN with "weird" parameters

Resolved

I would like to find a way to search for things like or . I think searching for any template with non blank |1= is a good start. I could for instance replace those with |section= to a new template Template:ISBN section similar to other section templates. To be honest Template:ISBN missing is a better name than Template:ISBN to avoid confusions. -- Magioladitis (talk) 14:16, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Magioladitis, yes we should rename the template. it's a very common problem. I just added some tracking with Category:Articles using the ISBN template incorrectly, and tested to make sure it works. it will take some time for the servers to fill it up. Frietjes (talk) 15:09, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
It's normal for banner-type cleanup templates to recognise |section. Although templates like {{cleanup section}} do exist, a lot of them are simply wrappers for e.g. {{cleanup|section}}. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:44, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Judging by the fixes that I've made so far, the link between almost all instances is that the {{ISBN}} was used on a French-language book, so it's probable that people familiar with {{ISBN}} on the French Misplaced Pages are assuming that it's the same here. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:58, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
yes, and I have started a thread concerning renaming the template. Frietjes (talk) 16:06, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Redrose64 of course the the template gets renames we won't need the Template:ISBN section solution. -- Magioladitis (talk) 18:48, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Template:Infobox military memorial/doc

(→‎Parameters)

Hello, Frietjes – I'm interested to learn why you prefer the "pipe syntax" to {{Aligned table}} here, as, relatively speaking, the former generates a lot of whitespace (in the code). Is the monospaced font involved..?

Regards, Sardanaphalus (talk) 15:14, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

(1) seems strange that you are adverse to whitespace in code when you are going around adding spurious newlines and indentation to code. (2) the entire purpose of {{aligned table}} is for places where standard wikitable markup doesn't work (e.g., within infoboxes, navboxes, ...). (3) the code is less complicated and easier to read using standard wikitable markup. (4) the less inline css used, the better, since it extraneous inline style statements override site-level css stylesheets, and bloat the resulting html. Frietjes (talk) 16:05, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
  1. "Spurious"? I add spacing/alignment to code when structures within it – especially intermediate structures – are or have become obscured. Or, to put it more plainly, to give/restore some readability to it. (If, for example, you're a musician who has worked with a variety of handwritten and printed scores, you will – should – know what I mean.) The pipe syntax, for all its elegance, is marred by the gaps between rows it enforces, an unfortunate built-in bias toward the horizontal over the vertical.
  2. "the entire purpose..." – the entire purpose? Why such a limited horizon?
  3. "the code is less complicated and easier to read using standard markup" – such as those enforced gaps between rows, the mixing of content and formatting, the need e.g. to repeat a column's formatting that's consistent but different from others, etc, etc, etc..?
  4. "the less inline css used, the better..." As a guideline, I agree. But it seems this is a guideline that's become dogmatic, elevated to the point where it impedes the encyclopedia's presentation.
Sardanaphalus (talk) 00:10, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
  1. disagree
  2. reduce complexity, increase readability, and reduce server load
  3. disagree
  4. no, it encourages consistency and reduces spurious deviation. you should modifying your own personal stylesheet to achieve the linespacing/font styling you desire.

Edgars2007, I modified the script to handle "#invoke:". Frietjes (talk) 15:34, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. Anyway, why Template:URL has the |1= and |2= ? I put sandbox without them, and everything looks good for me: Template:URL/testcases, even whose with =. See my tests. --Edgars2007 (talk/contribs) 10:00, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
@Edgars2007: It's for cases when the URL contains an equals sign, most often found when the URL has a query string, like the page=1 in http://www.example.com/index.php?page=1 - if there are no equals signs in the URL, you can omit the 1= from the start. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:55, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Redrose64, as discussed above, the sandbox version doesn't have the 1= or 2= but appears to be working fine in the testcases. so, it seems that 1= and 2= are only needed when you call the template, not when the template passes the parameters to the module. for example, try {{URL| 1=http://www.example.com?foo=BaR |2=this=that}} vs. {{URL/sandbox| 1=http://www.example.com?foo=BaR |2=this=that}} Frietjes (talk) 18:38, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
On that testcases page, all but two of the examples that have an equals sign within the URL also have a 1= at the start. The two that do not are:
Code Result Sandbox Result
{{URL| http://www.example.com/foo/bar?a=b&c=d }} www.example.com/foo/bar?a=b&c=d www.example.com/foo/bar?a=b&c=d
{{URL| http://www.ex=ample.com | example }} example example
These do not yield the intended URLs. The 1= are necessary. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:28, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Redrose64, which has nothing to do with the original question. Frietjes (talk) 20:32, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Infobox Law enforcement agency

G'day, thanks again for the "aircrafts" fix. However, I have just come across another article displaying "aircrafts"; having a look, it's the "aircraft2" parameter. Could you fix it when you get a chance please? Cheers YSSYguy (talk) 22:49, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

YSSYguy, which article? Frietjes (talk) 22:52, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, which actually has "amphibious aircraft" entered in the infobox - I guess it's hard to cater for all situations. YSSYguy (talk) 22:57, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
YSSYguy, fixed. I have no idea who thought it was a good idea to have the infobox add the trailing s. we should really change it so you type the label exactly as you want it to appear in the infobox. Frietjes (talk) 23:09, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Infobox NFL coach, etc.

@Frietjes: Hey, I wanted to give you a head's up. As you may recall, we have an outstanding TfM for Infobox NFL player and Infobox NFL coach. I noticed that you were industriously working on upgrading the code for Infobox NFL coach today. Unfortunately, your changes are making the NFL coach infobox less like the NFL player infobox, and more like Infobox basketball biography, including the use of individual year and team parameters for each coach tenure, with the year-span tenure preceding the team, not the team followed by the tenure in parentheses as currently employed by Infobox NFL player. Please keep in mind, several hundred recent NFL coaches already employ Infobox NFL player. I would hate for your to invest a large amount of time in these 340 or so infoboxes for NFL coaches which are ultimately going to follow a different format for player and coach tenures. Completing revamp of Infobox NFL player was already on my to-do list (see insider discussion initiated here), to be followed by replacing all uses of Infobox NFL coach with the revamped Infobox NFL player. The primary purpose of the revamped Infobox NFL player is to pare its length, and make way for all coaches to use it in the near future. Please ping me back and let's discuss further. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:23, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Dirtlawyer1, the <br> delimited format for the years and teams is very bad on many levels, the most obvious being the difficulty in aligning the year spans with the teams. yes, I am aware, that this is eventually being merged with template:Infobox NFL player (now stagnate since 2012). it's much easier to go from the fine-grained format to a less fine-grained list format, than it is to do the reverse. Frietjes (talk) 23:27, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
Understood, Frietjes. But please be aware that it's not the several hundred coaches that are going to drive the formatting of the final version of Infobox NFL player; there are over 14,000 current uses of that template, which employs free-form player and coach tenures, with the team followed by a year-span tenure in a parenthetical. Converting those 14,000+ existing uses to double-delimited team-yearspan tenure format would be a massive undertaking, requiring more manual editing hours than we have available.
I understand if you want to complete your present tasks (it appears you are at least half way through the 340 existing uses of Infobox NFL coach). If so, I would ask that you convert the present infobox so that teams appear first, followed by the year-span in a parenthetical, consistent with our established WP:NFL format for Infobox NFL player and Infobox college football player. This is also consistent with how all infobox championships, honors and awards are formatted. When the revamped Infobox NFL player is done, it's going to look more like a slimmed-down version of its present incarnation than Infobox basketball biography or Infobox gridiron football. Design decisions were made in 2007, and a great deal of time and effort has been invested in trying to make them uniform throughout the American football universe.
What do you want to do? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:41, 4 February 2015 (UTC)
Dirtlawyer1, my primary goal was to fix the screwed up alignment issues with the years not being aligned with the teams, without making any significant change to the presentation. however, you are correct, in the context of a merger with the player infobox, it's very likely that the final presentation format will be a bulleted list. while it may be feasible to make changes to {{infobox NFL coach}} to have it produce output that looks like {{infobox NFL player}}, it would not be easy. coding it to work for articles like Pat Meyer would be simple, since it's a very simple pairing of years with teams. however, articles like Terrell Williams and Dave Gettleman are going to be more difficult, since there are parenthetical designations and multilevel year spans. what I can do is make a version of {{infobox NFL coach}}, which can be substituted, to leave a pre-filled version of {{infobox NFL biography}}. however, after it is substituted, the editor performing the substitution would then need to inspect the output and fix any formatting issues. the good news is that now that I finished with my work today (empty tracking category), this is actually possible, since we now have a nearly 1-to-1 correspondence between the years and the teams (so I can write * {{{player_team1}}} ({{{player_years1}}})). whereas before, the association between the years and teams was impossible for a machine/script/template to reliably parse. Frietjes (talk) 00:56, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Dirtlawyer1, there is now a first draft of a conversion template in the sandbox, you can see the differences in Template:Infobox NFL coach/testcases. I have marked the parameters with no obvious equivalents with a "Missing?" comment in the sandbox. I think a |current_title= would be useful for {{Infobox football biography}} to avoid overloading the |position= parameters. Frietjes (talk) 01:36, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Alma mater might be useful for coaches who never played in college, since this conversion now lists the college in the career section. Frietjes (talk) 01:52, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

I've got no argument with any of what you say above, Frietjes (but I need to look at those three or four suggestions you mention at the end of your comments above). My initial concern was that you were investing valuable time in something that's going to get tossed aside in a few months; however, if I understand your assessment above, you're telling me it's time well spent and your present efforts will actually help facilitate a mostly automated merge of the coach data points into a revamped Infobox NFL player. Given your description of the effort required to make a temporary Infobox NFL coach look more like Infobox NFL player, that's clearly not worth anyone's time (and especially yours) for a temporary solution.

As to manual inspections of the 340 coaches' infoboxes after an automated merge, that's a relatively small task compared to dealing with manual inspections/editing of the existing 14,000+ uses of Infobox NFL player. I helped implement the last round of merges into Infobox NFL player several years ago, when we were eliminating the separate infoboxes for retired NFL and AFL players (Infobox pro player is a remnant of that effort), and I replaced several hundred old infoboxes manually with the Infobox NFL player. Most required not only inspection, but significant manual edits, and the old AFL players often required a working knowledge of 1960s NFL/AFL history to get it right. Eagles247, two or three other editors and I did virtually all of the work, and that was after a script was employed to change the parameter names and add several new ones. Frankly, I still encounter a lot of bad automated edits from the script in the older NFL articles, and that colors my reaction when anyone suggests automated script edits are some sort of panacea. If we have only three football infoboxes left at the end of 2015 (Infobox NFL player (perhaps re-styled "Infobox NFL biography"), Infobox college football player, Infobox gridiron football person), with the first two significantly revamped and upgraded, I would count this year as a huge success for the related WikiProjects.

I have Technical 13 working on the coding for a revamped Infobox college football player, but after the initial mock-ups are completed for approval by WP:CFB members, I would very much like you to review those efforts with T13 to make sure that we have done the revamped coding in the simplest, most elegant manner. After that, I intend to take a revamped Infobox NFL player to WP:CFB and WP:NFL members for comments, and I could use your help there, too, but that's probably 60 days down the road -- we've just begun the "insider" discussions on point. I'm not going to touch Infobox gridiron football person; that's the baby of WP:CFL, and I'm under the impression they like it just fine the way it is for both CFL players and the handful of notable Canadian CIS college players. American and Canadian football are different enough that they do not need to have a common infobox; the CFL guys had the opportunity to join the effort associated with the then-new Infobox NFL player in 2007, but chose to continue using the older template. Personally, I think visually distinguishing between American and Canadian pros is entirely appropriate -- it really is two different games in a lot of ways. After eliminating 8 or 9 other American football specialized templates over the last 7 years, we should call only 3 left standing a major victory. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 01:58, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

FYI, I like your revamped "sandbox" version better than the existing rendering of the infobox. I do not that Terrell Williams needs to be converted to Infobox college coach, which is the uniform template for all American college coaches, including football -- I will mention to Jweiss11. He loves that kind of work. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 02:05, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Dirtlawyer1, with a |alma mater= (for coaches who never played) and |coaching_position= or |current_title= (for coaches who were both players and coaches), I believe I could convert all of the existing NFL coach transclusions to use NFL player/biography, without any loss of information. Hi Frietjes. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Misplaced Pages. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Misplaced Pages's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Which is where you come in :) You are a highly active Wikipedian (42nd to be exact), and you were active back during the January 2012 discussion/voting for the SOPA, yet you did not chose to participate in said vote. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why was that so? For your convenience, I prepared a short survey at meta, which should not take more than a minute of your time. I would dearly appreciate you taking this minute; not only as a Misplaced Pages researcher but as a fellow content creator and concerned member of the community (I believe your answers may help us eventually improve our policies and thus, the project's governance). Infobox template help

Hi, Thanks for adding the "palgrid" field to Template:Infobox Palestine municipality. Can you please change Template:Infobox Israel village and so that the fields "grid_name" and "grid_position" from Infobox settlement are activated? I tried it but must have done something wrong so I reverted. The syntax scares me. It is best to allow the two raw grid fields rather than specifically "palgrid" since some places should use the new Israel grid rather than the old one. Thanks. Zero 01:51, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Perhaps also Template:Infobox Israel municipality? Take Ein Mahil: I would like to add
|grid name=Palestine grid
|grid position=183/236
to the info box: that would be very useful. Huldra (talk) 19:34, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
@Zero0000 and Huldra:, done? you will want to update the documentation if possible. Frietjes (talk) 15:39, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
Ok thanks, but when I tried adding the above info to Ein Mahil, then nothing was visible? Got it, just adding |palgrid=183/236 works fine, Thanks! Huldra (talk) 20:15, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

I am sure you meant well, and this seems like an innocuous change, but in such a politically charged topic area, it has the (perhaps unintended) consequence of implying that Israeli localities are in Palestine. Since the Palestine grid has been superseded by the Israeli Cassini Soldner grid, could we change the grid_name in the Israeli Infobox templates to "ICS Grid"? Brad Dyer (talk) 01:12, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

@Brad Dyer, Zero0000, and Huldra: you should probably discuss this at Template talk:Infobox Israel municipality, or just change it. Frietjes (talk) 01:14, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Ok, thanks, I just changed it (all the comments above about syntax made me a bit scared to do it, but it seems like a simple textual change). 01:22, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

There are good reasons for using the old Palestine grid for some localities, while for many modern places Israeli Transverse Mercator is appropriate. I don't know of any case where ICS would be appropriate. (Despite claims, ICS is not the same as the Palestine grid; northing differs by 1000 km). I'm changing the template to allow the "grid_name" and "grid_position" fields to be used directly, so the grid can be chosen for each locality. It also allows two grids to be mentioned at a squeeze. Zero 08:11, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Frietjes, thanks for this: WT:CFB#New rivalry table template. Forcing this issue of standardization of rivalry series tables is long overdue, and I will do my best to nudge this toward an eventual consensus on the WP:CFB talk page. I know Jweiss11 and several other CFB regulars have wanted to address this for a while, and your proposal should help bring it to a head. If other editors don't start offering their opinions in the next 24 hours, I'll notify the usual suspects on their user talk pages and request their input. At the end of the day, we always try to get maximum buy-in for these sorts of changes so we can enforce the standard formatting in CFB articles later. If we can point to a mini-RfC on point with an !vote in support, it usually eliminates most pockets of resistance. Cheers. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 03:11, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Nested infobox

About a year ago you turned {{infobox drug}} from a wikitable into a regular {{infobox}}. At the moment I am preparing some improvements. I saw you introduced a construction like

|header55={{infobox|child=yes |label1=...|data1=... }}

I can see some advantage (eg blanks => no show), but I wonder if it is required to do so. Would I introduce insurmountable problems when I convert to a regular |labelN=..|dataN=... setup? The regular issues I can manage I think. -DePiep (talk) 19:38, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

DePiep, checking the code for {{infobox drug}}, the child infoboxes are wrapped inside a '#switch:' which suppresses the output when |type=combo or |type=vaccine. since all of the parameters in those child boxes are turned off when the type is combo/vaccine, it was easier to put them in a child box rather than duplicating the switch on every single data field in those sections. Template:Fb rbr position

Hello Frietjes. I was wondering if you could help me with a template you did some work on (Template:Fb rbr position). You created the subpage Template:Fb rbr position/c, which displays the colors for the positions. Do you think you could add a parameter for a different color for relegation playoffs? It would be before the normal relegation spots (i.e. 15 is normal, 16 is relegation playoff, 17-18 is relegation), and would be only for one spot. So, for example, if rp was set to 16 and r was set to 17, rp would be the relegation playoff color, and r would be like it already is. This would help with leagues like the Bundesliga that have this spot. And could the color possibly be FFE6E6? If you are confused, see the bottom three spots here Thanks, I am not very good with this kind of markup on Misplaced Pages. SAJ (T) 17:26, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
