    The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
    This specific page is the requests page for the illustration workshop. Anyone can make a request for an illustration to be improved or created for a Misplaced Pages article. Clicking the "New Request" button will bring you to a standard template for submitting requests, as well as general advice that should be followed.

    Advice to requesters

    All requests:

    • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Misplaced Pages's fair-use policies.
      • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
    • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
    • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

    SVG requests:

    • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
    • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

    Is the vector graphic I've added to the gallery accurate enough to use as a basis? NikNaks talk - gallery 18:06, 28 March 2015 (UTC)

    Image's request under progression Request taken by Sodacan (talk) 14:11, 26 April 2015 (UTC).

    @User:TRAJAN 117: I based the 1889-1912 flag on the file: File:Dragonflag.jpg. Sodacan (talk) 14:59, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
    And the 1862-1889 flag on this photo: Flag from 'Fuzhou China Shipping Culture Museum' Sodacan (talk) 15:04, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
    @Sodacan:, I do not believe that your vectorization of the the 1889-1912 flag is based on a reliable source. Look at e. g. , it shows the flag we already have. I found the image of File:Dragonflag.jpg also as File:Personal standard of State Chief Bao Dai.png, where I know that it is outrightly wrong, as the correct flag of Bao Dai is different (image is based on books I have at home).

    At the moment, I think the SVG should not be used. Another topic: The colors, shouldn't we use the yellow of File:Flag_of_the_Qing_dynasty_(1889-1912).svg?--Antemister (talk) 17:12, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

    @Sodacan: Many thanks for vectorising these flags, as I completely forgot about them! However, I noticed that the dragon scales are missing on the first two flags, just wondering if you could perhaps correct this, many thanks. TRAJAN 117 (talk) 15:02, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

    Request
    Hi, if anyone fancies doing it, I would like to request a version of this graphic that also shows the actual percentages of votes cast for each of the parties in the 2015 general election. I am envisaging that this could be done using some kind of colour-coded graphical symbol -- one that can be distinguished from the dots representing the polls -- placed at the extreme right of the existing graphic. There would also need to be a way of explaining the meaning in the caption (see existing caption at e.g. Opinion polling for the 2015 United Kingdom general election#Graphical summary). The actual numbers of votes cast for each of the parties are available here. The colour-coding used in the graphic is explained in the above-linked caption. BTW, I mentioned this request to the creator of the image, but no response.

    It appears the center machete, star and cogwheel are the same as from the Flag of Angola. Cheers, Mliu92 (talk) 17:18, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
    Would any of these wreaths be suitable? If so, it'd be trivial to recolour it gold and put the pieces together. NikNaks talk - gallery 19:36, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
    I've put an example wreath on an SVG. It can always be changed later. NikNaks talk - gallery 14:35, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

    @NikNaks: Although one should not be that strict with african flags, I believe File:Coat of Arms of the People's Republic of Congo.svg has a better one for that flag.--Antemister (talk) 20:37, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

    I tried fiddling with that wreath and coloured it as with the FOTW source, but I'm not convinced by it, really! You can mess around with it if you want to try to get it looking better. I'm not really sure what to try... NikNaks talk - gallery 12:44, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
    I might be able to try an alternate style of wreath as well this afternoon, to see how everyone feels. Fry1989 16:42, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
    Yeah my try didn't turn out so good :( I think it would be important to get it to look ore like the image in FOTW though. Fry1989 22:25, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
    I agree, but the image on FOTW is too small to be able to trace it and have it look half decent. NikNaks talk - gallery 11:35, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

    Any idea if some of the component diagrams are available as vectors? I had a quick look for the tank and the plane but couldn't find anything useful. NikNaks talk - gallery 13:39, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
    Made a start with the CoA. Will keep looking for the other components. NikNaks talk - gallery 14:09, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
    @TRAJAN 117: Okay, I found a reasonably similar schematic for the tank (an AMX-13 according to FOTW) that I traced and put in, but I can't find anything under Mirage that looks similar to the plane. There's also no information on the ship so I'm a bit clueless there. Let me know if you have more information that could help. NikNaks talk - gallery 13:00, 13 July 2015 (UTC)

    @NikNaks: sent it to you.--Antemister (talk) 10:14, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

    Thank you for the PDF. It is still not quite perfect as far as tracing is concerned, but it is at least much better than the other image we had. I've traced the remaining machines and added them to the image. If it is preferable to use the tank from the PDF as well, so that it is more consistent, I've included that in the file as well (just change the tank in x:href="#tank" to tank2. I'm not sure what else can be done on this without access to schematics of the machinery or access to a proper vector artist! NikNaks talk - gallery 13:26, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
    Is it possible to use thinner contours for ship and plane? Now this is somewhat inconsistent in relation to the emblem. Could you add the fringe from File:Flag of the Vietnamese National Army.svg?--Antemister (talk) 21:41, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

    @Antemister: & @NikNaks: looks great, many thanks. Note: the standard should have a 3:4 ratio. TRAJAN 117 (talk) 03:06, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

    The thinner lines would require a manual trace that I don't really have the time or energy for at present. Anyone else is welcome to have a go, though. As for the fringe it seems like a lot of effort to try to include it, especially as it is such a huge file that it will likely crash my copy of Inkscape. I will, however, fix the dimensions. NikNaks talk - gallery 15:58, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
    I heavily optimised the Vietnam fringe and added it to the file, too. NikNaks talk - gallery 16:52, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

    Please have a look at this picture, which is available from this web page – it's a very good high-level illustration of how the whole Android ecosystem is fragmented, which results in numerous negative implications for the platform as a whole. This illustration would be a very nice addition to the Stagefright (bug) article, and based on the content it depicts I'd say that we should have no copyright issues.

    It seems that the image itself originates here. If it's a question of copyright and whether or not we can include it as-is, you might want to try the copyright pump at Commons as they usually have better insight into that kind of thing. If you want us to try and reproduce the image in a different way, then make that clearer in your request.  :) NikNaks talk - gallery 13:56, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
    That's a great find, thank you very much! You're right, I wasn't clear enough, :) and based on the original web page you've found I'd say that it might be somewhat easier to just create our own instance of that drawing. It seems to be an SVG embedded into HTML on the original web page, so we might be able to use that embedded SVG code to quickly create our separate SVG file? — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 14:13, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

    Example of image masking for Knight Lore

    Mask (computing)
    Request
    I'm writing an article on a landmark video game known for popularizing the isomorphic style. The developers' technique for doing this was a mystery to many devs at the time and I'd like to be able to illustrate how they used image masking. The gist, as I understand it, is that images used to collide with each other, so instead the devs made an image mask (in white in the example) and added detail in black atop it (monochromatic preferred). My prose source has a visual example of the masking effect here. There is an image that kind of illustrates this, but I'm not sure about the copyright of its components, so I asked its author. So I'm requesting an illustration of the additive image masking used in the game, or a free use version of the mask illustrated in my Dropbox link. Thanks! – czar 22:13, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
    • I could also use some help finding/making an illustration of the overlapping bricks used in the article. It would be nice to have a side-by-side of how the object would look with one sprite placed atop the other and one where each sprite overlaps the next (like the image). I know it's a bit confusing, but the article explains the idea. – czar 22:26, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

    @Czar: This is an interesting request, and one that was solved mathematically using the data at the linked article. By definition, the population density is the population divided by area, or:
    d p o p P A {\displaystyle d_{pop}\equiv {\frac {P}{A}}} or, equivalently, P = d p o p A {\displaystyle {P}=d_{pop}\cdot A}
    We want to resize each state according to its population, so each state's new area will be defined by a new (constant) population density, d p o p , n {\displaystyle d_{pop,n}} :
    A n e w = P d p o p , n {\displaystyle A_{new}={\frac {P}{d_{pop,n}}}}
    We can substitute for P {\displaystyle P} in the above expression to get:
    A n e w = P d p o p , n = ( d p o p A ) d p o p , n = A ( d p o p d p o p , n ) {\displaystyle A_{new}={\frac {P}{d_{pop,n}}}={\frac {\left(d_{pop}\cdot A\right)}{d_{pop,n}}}=A\cdot \left({\frac {d_{pop}}{d_{pop,n}}}\right)}
    This means the new area A n e w {\displaystyle A_{new}} is simply the existing area A {\displaystyle A} multiplied by an areal scaling factor ( d p o p d p o p , n ) {\displaystyle \left({\frac {d_{pop}}{d_{pop,n}}}\right)} . Since area is the product of two dimensions, we can apply an equal scaling factor in each dimension (which is what the SVG expects) by taking the square root of the areal scaling factor:
    S x , y = d p o p d p o p , n {\displaystyle S_{x,y}={\sqrt {\frac {d_{pop}}{d_{pop,n}}}}}
    I took the new population density to be equal to the 2013 population density of New Jersey, 1,210.1 persons per square mile, which in essence normalizes the scaling factor to New Jersey. For instance, California has a population density of 246.1 persons per square mile, so:
    S x , y C A = d p o p d p o p , n = 246.1 1210.1 = 0.451 {\displaystyle S_{x,y}^{CA}={\sqrt {\frac {d_{pop}}{d_{pop,n}}}}={\sqrt {\frac {246.1}{1210.1}}}=0.451}
    That means that I can apply a scaling transformation factor of 0.451 to the California SVG object in each (x,y) dimension. When all is said and done, though, I had to end up translating most of the state SVG objects as well, so it ended up being a matrix transform (scaling + translation). When the population and/or land areas update, the updated data could be used to adjust the scaling factors in the SVG directly without having to go through a graphical editor. Please feel free to adjust the SVG file to taste, as the scaling also affects the border size of the file.

    Both of these fair use PNG images have recently been resized by User:Theo's Little Bot. Unfortunately, the quality of the resized images is noticeably lower than the original files (comparing the text, in particular, shows this). Therefore, it would be great if someone could try to resize the images again while retaining the quality. Alternatively (and preferably), it strikes me that these images are prime candidates for converting to SVGs, as they are relatively simple. The original, full quality versions of the images (which would need to be the basis of any fixes) are due to be deleted on 7 September. Thank you. -- Wumpus12 (talk) 10:39, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

    As I said, it's most noticeable around the text (looks a bit fuzzy). It is, admittedly, more noticeable on my iPhone (retina display) than my computer monitor, but still noticeable. Maybe I'm being picky. The other issue (which I forgot to mention above) is that the file sizes are now quite a bit larger, despite the images being physically smaller. – Wumpus12 (talk) 21:06, 31 August 2015 (UTC)

    There is a problem with the first Image, made by Spitzl, as used on Misplaced Pages. First of all, weirdly, it is an SVG file, with only Bitmap content, the lines are not vector. But this problem is minor. The bigger one is the data itself. I went to http://stats.oecd.org/Index.aspx?QueryName=426&QueryType=View&Lang=en which is given as the source and downloaded the data myself, then made a new graph using the same data. But my graph looks different, which (given it is supposedly the same data from the same source) should not be the case.
    In the second image I overlaid my own graph (thin lines) on the image currently used, trying to match the percentages and the years as exactly as possible. Sorry about Ireland, forgot about them. Everything is off, sometimes substantially so.
    In the third image I did the same again, but this time disregarded the X- and Y-axis labeling (I know, you should not do this!) instead trying to match the lines as good as possible. Here most work out well, but France and Portugal are still very much off.
    I would love to upload my ODS file, but commons does not accept ODS files. Instead I describe what I did. I downloaded the annual growth rate table from the URL given above, then set 2000 as 100, and used the following formula for the next years: =LASTYEAR/(100+GROWTHRATE)*100
    Can anyone help making sense of this? Did I do something really wrong? Did Spitzl do something really wrong? Is there another explanation? Thanks a lot in advance.-- Lommes (talk) 10:38, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
    Dear Lommes, when I made this graph I used the figures from "Total Economy". That means, when you go to the OECD data source, you need not change not only the measure drop down menu to "Index OECD base year (2010=100)" but also the sector to "Total Economy". Hope that solves the problem. If you still get different results, feel free to replace the graph with your own. Best wishes, --spitzl (talk) 20:24, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

The typeface is Century Schoolbook, but it appears the weight used in the actual seal is some extra-heavy weight that I don't have installed. I adjusted it to space roughly identical to the spacing around the rim, although there ended up being more space between letters than the original, as a result.

    So File:Sesame Street logo.svg was already a SVG but it was PD-textlogo and about to be moved to Commons. File:IStock LP 2014 Corporate Logo.png was also PD-textlogo and ready for Commons but it was a PNG. I took care of both of them, but for some reason I couldn't upload either as a SVG (the uploader changes .svg to .svg.jpg). I put them in their respective articles, but the SS logo was RV'd for being lower quality. I'd like to convert them both to SVG. Hop on Bananas (talk) 18:15, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

    Edit:Both originally had trans. backgrounds, but the uploader changed them to white. Hop on Bananas (talk) 18:20, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

    Edit 2:When I moved File:This Side of Paradise dust jacket.gif to WC, the filetype changed from .gif to .gif.png. The file is now on WC here. I'll tag it with the should be PNG tag (forgot the template name). Anyway, it seems like the uploader changes everything to .jpg. Is anyone else having this problem? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hop on Bananas (talkcontribs) 22:29, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

    It's been renamed to File:This Side of Paradise dust jacket.jpg. postdlf (talk) 01:29, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

    So, using CommonsHelper (which I'd have used in the first place if I'd known about it back then) I uploaded a new SVG (CommonsHelper doesn't change the filename) and replaced all uses (except on this page) of File:Sesame Street logo.svg with it. It's at File:Sesame Street sign.svg. (CommonsHelper wouldn't let me upload the image with the same filename but a different file format as File:Sesame Street logo.jpg, so I changed the name to something else appropriate). I think we can delete both File:Sesame Street logo.svg and File:Sesame Street logo.jpg. Hop on Bananas (talk) 14:57, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

    Actually, we can save the JPG version on Commons since it's tagged with {{Vector version available}}, but we can delete the local SVG since I've replaced it with the Commons SVG everywhere it's used (except here). Hop on Bananas (talk) 17:38, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

    • Its title is both in incorrect English and not quite accurate. For example, Ganymede is the ninth-largest known body in the Solar System, larger than the planet Mercury, which hardly makes it a 'small body'. The shortest accurate title that I can think of is "Non-planets of the Solar System to scale".
    • Its subtitle is not quite accurate either (Pluto is not a planet, so its moons do not fall under any of the categories mentioned) and is better in sentence case. It should be "Dwarf planets (Pluto & Ceres) • Moons of planets and dwarf planets • Asteroids • Comets".
    • Sentence case is also better elsewhere in the image
    • The zoomed-in images have a "NO TO SCALE", which should be "NOT TO SCALE"
    • There is "THE RAPRESENTATION etc.". I can't quite figure out what this is supposed to tell the viewer, so I don't quite know how this is best rephrased. At the very least it should be "THE REPRESENTATION" and "TO SCALE".
    • There is a list of spacecraft that took images of the objects in the image. It should say "Voyager 1–2", with an endash (–), not a hyphen (-). There is also "Cassini-Huygens", which is best shortened to simply "Cassini", because the Huygens part was a lander and didn't take images from space.
    • Every header has "XX moon(s) system". The "system" is simply unnecessary and should be removed.
    • The asteroids' header says "Some Asteroid Belt Bodies". This is both inaccurate (433 Eros is a near-Earth asteroid) and clumsily said. It's better if it simply says "Some asteroids" or "Several asteroids".
    • In the Pluto system, Stix → Styx
    • Also in the Pluto system, there is a better image available of Nix (File:Nix_in_Color_Released_September_11_2015.png) than currently used in the image. --JorisvS (talk) 15:09, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

    Pipe bending

    Article(s)
    The article I am currently working on that needs this isUser:Spinningspark/Work in progress/Inverted-F antenna, but this has been a recurring problem in numerous articles, mechanical filter for example.
    Request
    A long standing problem I have had with images I have created in articles is putting bends in cables, pipes, wires etc. As an example, I would like to put a bend in the copper wire shown in the first image. I have never found a satisfactory way of doing this so that the highlighting follows the bend. If you zoom in on the bends in the second image you will see they have been bodged. Ideally, I would like to be able to draw an arbitrary path and have the highlighting follow the path. I am not asking anyone to work on a particular image (you can if you want though), I just want to know how to do it myself. -- SpinningSpark 16:08, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

    Added two variations using inkscape and working with lines only (wire problem.svg) - Cheers FOX 52 (talk) 06:09, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
    Thanks for the tip, I'll try it and see how I get on. It's a bit more messy than doing it with gradients, it is no longer a single object, so making adjustments to it are more complicated. It's a pity that gradients aren't more flexible. There is a limited repertoire and it seems to be impossible to place the stops of a gradient at arbitrary positions. At least, that is true in Inkscape. SpinningSpark 13:51, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
    @Spinningspark: don't use gradients, insert a thinner & lighter line, and then blur it to your liking -cheers FOX 52 (talk) 16:21, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
    Yes, I had uderstood how you had achieved that. Rather, my point was that this is more difficult to manipulate than gradients. For example, the bent copper wire shown above was created by your method, but with more variations; one for each of the stops on the original straight wire. If I wish to shorten the angled portion of the wire, I must adjust the end nodes of each variation individually. This is not so hard with a vertical or horizontal wire, but is a pain for the example given. Note that this is not a made up example; I am really trying to do this right now. I believe that doing an exact replica is not easy; I know you did your best. Can you make the SVG image larger in pixels, so borders would look nice and easy to bear? --George Ho (talk) 17:43, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
    Not a problem and done - FOX 52 (talk) 18:30, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
    The image becomes harder to see, especially when viewed in 220px. I added the image here for readership. Maybe the font should be plateau-ish (more ink-ish, maybe) in white color, as seen in the non-free image. I don't know the basics of SVG developing, so you can make it more visible. George Ho (talk) 18:46, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
    Or maybe just make the borders more solid... but not too solid. George Ho (talk) 18:47, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
    I've changed it to black and white, I think that is your best option, maybe you can get another editors input cheers - FOX 52 (talk) 20:53, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
    Fine, I'll wait for others to make other versions. George Ho (talk) 20:59, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
    Wait, Fox, can you reverse colors of the background and the font? I mean, make the background transparent and the font black? Or create another version at a separate file? I didn't say proper words. George Ho (talk) 22:01, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
    Yeah I just reversed the values and went transparent - FOX 52 (talk) 22:47, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
