Ukrainian Sign Language (Template:Lang-uk) is the sign language of the deaf community of Ukraine. Ukrainian sign language belongs to a family of French Sign Languages. It is as close to Russian Sign Language as the sign varieties of various Russian cities are to each other. Worldwide awareness of Ukrainian sign language rose sharply in 2014 after Ukrainian film The Tribe, where actors communicated in Ukrainian sign language with no spoken dialogue.

The governing body that publishes language books and research articles and regulates the methods of teaching Ukrainian sign language is the Laboratory of sign language at the Institute of Special Education of National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine.

History

Teaching of sign language in Ukraine began in 1830, when the Lviv School for Deaf Children was opened. In 1834 similar deaf school was opened in Odesa. The language was the essentially the same as that taught elsewhere in the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires.

During the Soviet occupation of Ukraine, the development of teaching methods for sign language slowed down, to a great extend due to the negative feedback that Joseph Stalin provided to sign languages in his 1950 article Marxism and Problems of Linguistics in which Stalin called deaf people "anomalous human beings" and described gesture language as "not a language at all, but a surrogate".

Schools

According to Kyiv Post article from 2010, there are 59 schools for the deaf teaching Ukrainian sign language in Ukraine. Furthermore, there are 35 kindergartens for deaf children in Ukraine.
