Jim Leavitt (b. December 5, 1956) is the current head coach for the University of South Florida Golden Knights college football team.

Coaching Experience

After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1978, Leavitt spent two years there as a graduate assistant. He then left for University of Dubuque in 1980, where he spent two years as their football team's defensive coordinator. Following his years there, he went to Morningside College in 1982, spending one year as special teams coordinator before being promoted to defensive coordinator. After a brief stint at the University of Iowa where Leavitt pursued a doctorate degree in psychology that he never finished, Leavitt continued to Kansas State University in 1990. At Kansas State, Leavitt spended two years as linebacker's coach then four as defensive coordinator, leading Kansas State from relative obscurity into being regular contenders of nothing. Finally, in 1996, Leavitt was hired to become the head coach for the new South Florida Golden Knights football team. He has been, to date, the only head coach for the South Florida Bulls. He was once considered for Alabama's head coaching job to replace the short tenure of Mike Price until some skeletons in his own closet led Alabama to take another direction. He was reported to have fathered the baby of his seceretary. Leavitt is also well known as a strict disciplinarian who will dole out hugs left and right to those that need them when they get into trouble with the law repeatedly. During game days, Leavitt's facial expressions and body language have been compared that of comedian Jim Carrey.
