Peroorkada is a residential locality in the Municipal Corporation of Thiruvananthapuram (previously Trivandrum) in the state of Kerala, India, It is located 7 km, north east, from Thiruvananthapuram Central Bus Station and on the way to Nedumangad and Ponmudi. Roads from Mannanthala, Vattiyoorkavu, Nedumangad and Ambalamukku meet at Peroorkada. Once a village, Peroorkada has seen rapid development over the last four decades with the setting up of hospitals, shopping complexes and petrol pumps. Now Thiruvananthapuram District collectors office have been shifted near to this locality named Kudappanakunnu. This area is now the Ward 31 of the Corporation of Thiruvananthapuram and the elected Ward member is Prof. Chandra. J.

Etymology

Peroorkada was earlier known as Maruthanmoodu after a giant Maruthan tree located in the town's center. Maruthanmoodu later acquired the name "Peroorkada" from the nearby town, which itself was named after a Hindu temple, the Peroor Sree Krishna Swamy Temple, located there. Later the location of the temple acquired a new title, Ambalamukku, and so the town.

Amenities

Prominent institutions at Peroorkada include the HLL Lifecare (which is one of South Asia's largest producers of condoms), Peroorkada Government Hospital, Oolampara Mental Hospital, ESI Hospital, Peroorkada Police station, the Peroorkada Market, several schools, a Law Academy and the local post office. The area has seen a rapid rise in urbanization with the setting up of the new civil station at Kudappanakunnu. Peroorkada's public transport needs are serviced by comprehensive city bus services by both the government and private transportation. At Peroorkada, there are two stadiums, one of which is the Thankamma Stadium. There are several temples, few churches and one mosque. Many banks including the State Bank of India have their branches at Peroorkada. Salim Brothers Youth and Social Development Centre is a charitable organization locating in peroorkada which is promoting sports, arts and educational activities.

There are many Gulf-returnees, as well as educated Malayalis from other parts of Kerala who made the locality their home. This gives the place an urban feel, though, like in most other places of Kerala, still not cosmopolitan enough.

Many locals from the Peroorkada region, G C Nagar Residents' Association Chempakamoodu, Abhaya Nagar Residence Association, Ambalamukku, Oolampara, Mannammoola, NCC Nagar, Ambala nagar colony, Kudappanakunnu, Indira Nagar, AKG Nagar, Mannammoola and Mannanthala are now successful professionals or personalities by themselves across the world.

The locality expanded since the mid-1980s, when many Gulf-returning Malayalis preferred to buy properties/ build houses in this area of Thiruvananthapuram, rather than in their original native places in central Travancore. This led to a property boom, which was accentuated by the establishment of the Doordarshan Kendra nearby, as well as the accessibility of hospitals and well-run private schools. Good access to downtown Thiruvananthapuram - through KSRTC city buses, as well as autos helped large scale migration; making Peroorkada, the second most desirable suburb in Thiruvananthapuram, after PTP Nagar. The District Collectorate for Thiruvananthapuram have been set up at new Civil station, Kudappanakunnu, to the north of Peroorkada. Famous Culturelcentre Winners sports arts and village recreation club is situated at near peroorkada
