DeVonta Smith, also known as Alabama's "Slim Reaper" and "Smitty" (born November 14, 1998) is an American football wide receiver for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He is best known for winning the 2020 Heisman Trophy.
High school career
Smith attended Amite High Magnet School in Amite City, Louisiana. He committed to the University of Alabama to play college football.
College career
As a true freshman at Alabama in 2017, Smith had eight receptions for 160 yards and three touchdowns. In the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship against Georgia, Smith had the game-winning touchdown reception in overtime to give Alabama the 26–23 victory. As a sophomore in 2018, he had 42 receptions for 693 yards and six touchdowns. Smith continued to build his resume with another strong season in his junior year with 68 receptions for 1,256 yards and 14 touchdowns. On January 6, 2020, Smith announced that he would return to Alabama for his senior season. On November 21, 2020, Smith broke the all-time SEC career record for most receiving touchdowns, with two against Kentucky. Despite standing a slight 6-foot-1 and weighing 175 pounds, Smith became the best wide receiver and the most accomplished player in college football. He leads the FBS in receptions (105), receiving yards (1,641) and receiving touchdowns (20). He has dropped only two passes all season.
Smith became the first wide receiver to win the AP Player of the Year award since its inception in 1998. Smith would beat out Kyle Trask, Trevor Lawrence and teammate Mac Jones to win the 2020 Heisman Trophy, becoming the first wide receiver since 1991 to win the award. During his Heisman acceptance speech, Smith took a moment to address younger athletes.
"To all the young kids out there that's not the biggest, not the strongest, just keep pushing, because I'm not the biggest," he said. "I've been doubted a lot just because of my size. Really, it just comes down to you put your mind to it, you can do it. No job is too big."
