Aryna Sabalenka is the two-time defending champion. She is aiming to become the first woman to win three consecutive Australian Open singles titles since Martina Hingis in 1999.

Sabalenka and Iga Świątek are in contention for the WTA No. 1 singles ranking. Sabalenka must reach at least the semifinals to have a chance at retaining the No. 1 ranking after Świątek reached the third round. Coco Gauff was also in contention for the top ranking at the beginning of the tournament.
