The official world records in the 5000 metres, or 5000-metre run, are held by Joshua Cheptegei with 12:35.36 for men and Beatrice Chebet with 13:54.00 for women.

The first world record in the men's 5000 m was recognized by World Athletics (formerly called the International Association of Athletics Federations, or IAAF) in 1912. As of January 2024, 37 world records have been ratified by World Athletics in the event.

The first world record in the women's 5000 m was recognized by the IAAF in 1981. As of December 2024, 17 world records have been ratified by the IAAF in the event.
