Sens incertain. On le rapproche parfois de l'arabe qafa (= nombre, attesté en occitan et en wallon sous les formes caf, caffe), pour en faire l'éventuel surnom d'un joueur. A noter que le nom voisin Caffier, qui est aussi celui d'une commune du Pas-de-Calais (Caffiers), est attesté comme nom de personne, et que E. Nègre y voit un hypothétique 'cat fier' (= chat sauvage).
