David Coren (Hebrew: דוד קורן, 8 June 1917 – 13 January 2011) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Alignment between 1969 and 1977. He also served as head of the Solam Tzur Regional Council and as president of the Western Galilee College.

Biography

Koren was born in Jerusalem in 1917 as David Coronel, descendant of Abraham Senior Coronel. Koren finished his studies at the Rehavia Gymnasium in 1934, and at the end of his studies went into Hakhshara in Naan (later Kibbutz Na'an). He then continued his studies at the Teachers Seminary in Ramat Rachel and for a year at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Koren, who joined the HaMahanot HaOlim, was in the movement's commune in Tel Aviv in the years 1936-1938. During this period it served, among other things, as the centre of the younger generation of the movement in the city. In 1938 he joined the "group of classes" in Ra'anana, and after a few months he went to training in Sedom, where he worked in the Sodom Dead Sea Factory, where he met his future wife, Hana Fenet.

In 1939 he was one of the founders of kibbutz Beit HaArava. After marrying Hana, he started his family in the kibbutz, including his son Gideon and lived there until 1948. During these years, he established connections between the kibbutz and Arabs in the surrounding area and Transjordan. In 1949, after there was a split in the group of Beit Arava evacuees who moved to Shefayim, Koren and his friends moved to the Western Galilee, and together with a core of the "Habonim" movement, founded Kibbutz Gesher HaZiv, where he lived until his death. Koren was later appointed Secretary of the kibbutz.

With the establishment of the Israeli Air Force in 1948, Koren was appointed, at the request of David Ben-Gurion, to serve as the head of the Personnel Department. In the years 1951-1952, he served as the Education Officer of the Nahal. After this position, he decided to retire, at least for a while, from the army and return to working to establish the kibbutz that he was one of the founders of. In the years 1953-1957, he taught Bible studies and mathematics (subjects in which he excelled as a boy) at the elementary school in Kibbutz Gesher Ziv, and also served as the School Principal. In the following two years, he founded the "Solem Tzur" high school, taught there and managed it.

In the years 1959-1961, he served as the head of the Youth and Nahal Division in the Ministry of Defense. After that, he served for about three years as the secretary of Kibbutz Gesher Ziv. In this position, he founded and managed the guest house there. Being a member of the Rafi political party, which merged with the Alignment Party, he served as a member of the Knesset during the years 1969-1977 on behalf of the Alignment party. He was considered close to, among others, David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan and Shimon Peres.

In the years 1968-1969 and 1979-1981, he served as the head of the Sulam Tzur Regional Council and was involved in the development of tourism in the region, and from 1981 until 1983 chaired the Friends of Nahariya Regional Hospital. In 1982, the Mateh Asher Regional Council was established as a union of the Solam Tzur, Gaaton and Na'aman regional councils. Koren served for six years as deputy head of the United Regional Council. In the years 1978-1980 he headed the "Association for the Development of the Western Galilee". In this capacity he contributed a lot to the establishment of settlements in the Tafen region and Meshgav.

Koren was one of the founders of the Western Galilee College, and served voluntarily as the college's president in the years 1985-2003. In 2008, he was awarded the "College Honoured Award".

In 1994 Koren was part of the delegation that went to the White House for the signing of the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty, as a guest of Yitzhak Rabin.
