Richter talks about how he grew up in East Germany where he attended Dresden's art school and escaped to the other side just before the Berlin Wall was built in this documentary. His entire artistic career is told in the documentary "Gerhardt Richter" made around the time of his enormously successful American retrospective at MOMA and SFMOMA entitled "40 Years of Paintings." The movie follows the artist at his house in Cologne, where he is undergoing a period of reflection and preparation before moving on to another series of paintings.
