The Monakhovo gorge (Kazakh: Монахов шатқалы), is a canyon in Kazakhstan. Its name is derived from Orthodox monks that hid in its caves to seek refuge from the Bolsheviks. The monks built a small church in a crevice in the rock. An anonymous tip, or the sheer carelessness of the monks, led them being noticed by the authorities. Following this, the monks were shot, and the cave with the church inside was demolished. Today, there exists only a shallow passage at the entrance to the rock's hiding place.

Description

The Almaty State Reserve has several ecological trails that display the Zailiysky Alatau mountain range. One of the most visited for its beauty is the Monakhovo gorge. It merges with the Right Talgar gorge at an altitude of approximately 1400 m. The gorge looks like a canyon with almost vertical walls of bare rocks, slopes with overhanging fir trees, a small cave and waterfalls. The Nun River flows through the entire gorge. The river's water is the cleanest during winter and summer and is drinkable. It is believed to have a healing and tonic effect. The path goes along the river and passes through the gorge with rocky, steep slopes overgrown with coniferous and deciduous forest, there are birches, pines, aspens, hawthorn, barberry, briar, etc. The air is generally clean. Strawberries and raspberries grow along the path to and from the gorge. Usually, the tour ends at the waterfall, which falls in two cascades in a press filled with huge blocks. At this point, the rocks converge, forming eaves. Monakhovo gorge is located in the mountains of the Trans-Ili Alatau, in the Maralsay gorge, on the territory of the Almaty reserve. The entire route can be completed in an hour and a half. The administration of the Almaty State Reserve is responsible for the preservation and protection of the natural monument.
